Possible update issue

Although  I read that new things are happening in Q4OS, my system has been returning the "your system is up to date" for several weeks, a bit longer than usual.  I tried the package updater and synaptic and got that result. From the command line, I ran

sudo apt-get update

and got the result:

Ign http://dl.google.com stable InRelease
Get:1 http://dl.google.com stable Release.gpg [916 B]
Get:2 http://security.debian.org jessie/updates InRelease [63.1 kB]
Get:3 http://dl.google.com stable Release [1,189 B]
E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/https could not be found.
N: Is the package apt-transport-https installed?

When I run ~$ cat /etc/*_version , I get:
8.6
1.8.1-n1

I usually consider it a bit of a relief when my system says it is up to date, but I ask because your recent post on the site suggests that Orion updated to another version. I know once several weeks ago I had an issue in which the system said there were updates but then would not effectively load them. Though I thought this sorted out, as it often does on Q4OS, but now I wonder if an issue arose.

Is there some other step I should take, or is it just that I am up-to-date?

Re: Possible update issue

Sounds like you actually have somehow had apt-transport-https uninstalled.  Your updates aren't syncing the "main" debian repos nor the q4os repos (which are set as https by default).

I would try

apt-get install apt-transport-https

, although I have a feeling that'll fail.

In order to get it reinstalled, you may want to edit your sources.list and whatever your "main" debian repos are change it from https to http, do an apt-get update, THEN do the apt-get install apt-transport-https.  After it's installed, change back the repos to https in sources.list, apt-get update again, and this should then allow for all repos to syncronize properly again, and you'll get your updates.

And I see no mention of https so I would guess it is the google site that requires it. I have noticed that apt-transport-https is installed on my system though, so it might be that it is just used behind the scenes without me knowing about it.

The requirements for the package seem quite small though, so if you cannot install it by conventional means then try downloading the .deb package direct from debian and then install with sudo dpkg -i apt-transport-https_1.0.9.8.4_amd64.deb (for the 64 bit version) remember to change to the directory that contains the deb file first.

Re: Possible update issue

Hmmm, maybe only certain mirrors are set for https then.  I know on some of my debian systems it uses https, I assumed that it was the default nowadays.

Re: Possible update issue

Given that Google are pushing heavily to identify all non HTTPS web sites to visitors as 'not secure' it makes perfect sense that their own d/l site would require https. Seamonkey via Sourceforge also requires https. Hopefully other sites will follow.

Having said that, things have been quiet in update land recently. Interesting that FF 51.0 was swiftly followed by ssl update and FF 51.01.....

Re: Possible update issue

You have a non-standard entry in your sources list:

deb https://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main non-free contrib

it should be:

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main non-free contrib

We would recommend you to edit the appropriate sources list file in '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' directory, and fix it manually.

There is another possibly non-compatible repository in sources list:

deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt/ all main

Re: Possible update issue

@q4osteam

Thank you.

I edited:
sources.list.d
20_debian_jessie.list

to now read:

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
# deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie non-free contrib main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main non-free contrib
# deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates contrib non-free main

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates non-free contrib main
# deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

# deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-proposed-updates contrib non-free main
# deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-proposed-updates contrib non-free main

Now when I run sudo apt-get update I get:

Ign http://dl.google.com stable InRelease
Get:1 http://dl.google.com stable Release.gpg [916 B]
E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/https could not be found.

Re: Possible update issue

We would need to get additional info. Please run in terminal and put output here:
$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list | grep -i '^deb'

Then uninstall Google Chrome from the Software centre and run:
$ sudo apt-get update

Post all terminal messages back.

@q4osteam:

Thank you.

I ran the command

cat /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list | grep -i '^deb'

and got the result

I uninstalled Google Chrome from the package manager.

I ran $ sudo apt-get update

Re: Possible update issue

Try to run following commands and post back the output:
$ sudo apt-get -o Dir::Etc::sourcelist="sources.list.d/10_q4os.list" -o Dir::Etc::sourceparts="-" --no-list-cleanup update
$ apt-config dump

In addition you could edit respective files in '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' and temporarily comment out following lines:

deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt/ all main
deb http://repository.spotify.com/ stable non-free

so they will look like this:

#deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt/ all main
#deb http://repository.spotify.com/ stable non-free

then run:
$ sudo apt-get update
and post output here as well.

@q4osteam. Thank you.

I uninstalled Spotify after I had trouble editing the spotify entry (demanded password credentials to edit).

I ran sudo apt-get -o Dir::Etc::sourcelist="sources.list.d/10_q4os.list" -o Dir::Etc::sourceparts="-" --no-list-cleanup update

Re: Possible update issue

Now, edit respective files in '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' directory and temporarily comment out following lines:

deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt/ all main
deb http://repository.spotify.com/ stable non-free

so they will look like this:

#deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt/ all main
#deb http://repository.spotify.com/ stable non-free

Then run:
$ qrepolist
$ sudo apt-get update
and post output here.

Re: Possible update issue

Good news! I just ran synaptic and was able to do an extensive update.
The search cat /etc/*_version brings the pleasing result:
8.7
1.8.2-n1

Thank you for your help.
Should I now edit the spotify and mozilla sources again to remove the #? Are there other steps I should take?

Re: Possible update issue

Well, glad to see such result smile  Now, you should take the following steps:

1.Full system upgrade
  $ sudo apt-get update
  $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

2. Upgrade the 'backports' kernel - important !
  $ sudo apt-get purge rtkit
  $ qinst-kernel-bpo
  $ reboot

3. Install Google Chrome again from Q4OS Software Centre

4. Do not edit former 'Spotify' repository manually, you should remove the respective '.list' file completely. Add Q4OS default 'Spotify' repositories and keyring instead:
  $ sudo qrepoadd spotify
  $ sudo apt-get update

5. Edit and revert the Ubuntuzilla sources again manually removing the '#' character, install 'apt-transport-https' package and update the system once more:
  $ sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https
  $ sudo apt-get update

Re: Possible update issue

In addition, we would recommend you to install Firefox and Thunderbird from Q4OS Software Centre, instead of using the Ubuntuzilla repositories. It's much easier as well as cleaner way.
