wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

on new msi cubi n-031xde the desktop is in right resolution (1920x1080) with q4os-live-1.8.1-x64 but after doing the UEFI install there is only 1024x768 available to display. So what is  wrong here. look like the grafic-driver is not installed. any idea what i can do?

i already did
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

First, you could try to install the 'Basic' profile from SW Profiler. We will investigate a bit and post some more info here as soon as possible.

EDIT: Would be helpful to post both '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' files from live-cd as well as from the target system here or send it via support@q4os.org

EDIT2: Did you try to configure resolution using 'tderandrtray' applet ?

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

ok, install the 'Basic' profile doesn't help and using 'tderandrtray'  ether.
Exciting, after install i can not start live-cd again to get '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' files from live-cd, because i have to start a windows software ;-) to reach BIOS.

may this is enough '/var/log/Xorg.0.log'  from running system:

Great, we are going to investigate logs, suppose we will answer in a hour or two, please be patient. By the way, you could attach files here, if you follow 'Post reply' link -> Attachment

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

Well, the preliminary finding is as follows. Both systems uses the same (slow) 'fbdev' graphics driver. The live system, in comparison to the real installation, allocates more memory for the graphics subsystem (for some unknown reason so far), so it's able to select higher resolution.

As a really proper solution, we would need to get Intel graphics driver to work. Now we are going to investigate more, and let you know as some new information is available.

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

As it's a hardware specific issue, and we are not able to make full testing on the equivalent hardware, the solution could be a bit unstraightforward. As a first attempt, we would recommend you to try to use newer kernel, it should be possibly the most efficient solution. So, follow commands in terminal:

- First, blacklist 'rtkit' package, as it's not compatible with newer kernels and could affect kernel stability, if installed accidentally. Very probably, you will not need this package in the future.
$ sudo apt-get remove rtkit
$ sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences.d/pin50-rtkit
paste following lines into 'pin50-rtkit' file:

Package: rtkit
Pin: release *
Pin-Priority: -1

- Run recent kernel installation:
$ qinst-kernel-bpo
$ sudo reboot

- Check you have booted the new kernel and blacklisted 'rtkit'
$ uname -a
$ apt-cache policy rtkit

Please post result here including the 'Xorg.0.log' file to be checked once more.

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

Thanks, but no change - still old resolution and not changeable.

$ uname -a
xy@q4os-desktop:~$ uname -a
Linux q4os-desktop 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u2 (2016-10-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux

The 'rtkit' package was not installed.

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

Your UEFI system is still booting the old kernel instead of the newly installed kernel 4.7.

Please try to stop the booting process tapping 'Esc' when you switch on the machine, and then select a non-default 'Q4OS Desktop 1.8, Orion' entry from the grub boot table. As the system loads, run in terminal:
$ uname -v
If the output looks like this:

#1 SMP Debian 4.7.8-1~bpo8+1 (2016-10-19)

you have successfully booted desired new kernel.

EDIT: You may need to enter 'Advanced options ...' entry in the grub boot table.

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

Well, there is probably some mismatch with the UEFI booting. Did the command 'qinst-kernel-bpo' proceed successfully ? You could safely run it again this way:
$ ( qinst-kernel-bpo 2>&1 ) | tee kernel_install.log
look at the output and post the 'kernel_install.log' here to analyze.

Yes, it's a good idea.

EDIT: In addition you could post some more info for us to check the grub configuration:
$ ls -l /boot/
$ sudo update-grub

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

That's it! I don't know why but this time the new kernel is taken and i also did a update grub.
Display resolution is right and changeable!

This script will install latest Linux kernel from backports repository.

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

Great, now you should have accelerated and proper Intel graphics driver working.

Please don't forget to blacklist 'rtkit' package as described above. We are going to update the 'qinst-kernel-bpo' script to include 'rtkit' blacklisting to be performed automatically. It will be available within the next update of the 'q4os-base' package, doing 'update && upgrade' will bring it for Q4OS users.

You might need to install firmware-realtek too to get rid of these error messages, although I had these on one of my systems and it did work ok without the firmware, but I installed it anyway to remove the errors.

Re: wrong display resolution after install, but works on liveCD

i'm not sure if rtkit is really blacklistet. but i did as you discribed.

xy@q4os-desktop:~$ apt-cache policy rtkit
rtkit:
  Installiert:           (keine)
  Installationskandidat: (keine)
  Paket-Pinning: 0.11-2
  Versionstabelle:
     0.11-2 -1
        500 http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie/main amd64 Packages
xy@q4os-desktop:~$

@Dai_trying
$ sudo apt-get update && apt-get install firmware-realtek

returns a message that already newest driver is installed.
My system works also fine without these driver.

Yes, that's all right. You can test it this way:
$ sudo apt-get install rtkit
Apt should refuse 'rtkit' installation.
