How can you help translate Q4OS to your language

Helping with Q4OS translations to any language is highly appreciated. The best and most easy way is to contribute to our 'q4os-i18n' project. We have published 'q4os-i18n' Git project here: https://github.com/q4osteam/q4os-i18n

If anyone want to help, there are two ways:

1. If you are familiar with the "Git" collaboration tool, please register at https://github.com/ . You will be able to upload translated files by Git pull requests. If you're interested, we can also set permissions, so that you can contribute to the Git tree directly, we can easily sync our work with Git.

2. Alternatively, you can simply download archive with all translation files here: https://github.com/q4osteam/q4os-i18n/a … master.zip . Find all files for language specific translations "somefile-xx.po" and translate related '.po' files using 'Poedit' application https://poedit.net/ . You will send finished via e-mail develop@q4os.org

Re: How can you help translate Q4OS to your language

Hello. I plan to update one of the translations.
And I have a couple of questions about this:
1. Do I really have to keep editing the already existing .po files in the xx directory or can I just start over using the .pot templates from the .pot_empty directory?
Why am I asking: some existing .po files contain some mysterious commented lines like

#~ msgid "passed OK !"

etc., that don't show up in Poedit. I suspect that this is something outdated or excluded strings, right? There are no such lines in the templates either.
2. Сan I somehow pre-check how the translation strings will fit on UI elements and how it will stack, etc.? I mean before it went to "production". Different languages have different word lengths, there are cases and declensions, and so on, well, you know. Something like a non-public package for testing.

Yes, they are outdated, just don't translate them.

Yes, compile the .po into .mo files using poedit, and copy them into their right placing, for ex. Welcome screen: /usr/share/locale/<lnagcode>/LC_MESSAGES/welcome-screen.mo

Re: How can you help translate Q4OS to your language

Hi,

I have installed Q4OS, and I have this untranslated sentence : "Full featured Desktop with Web Browser, Office Suite and recommended applications set." and some others like that.

In the desktop-profiler.po I found the translation (in french)  but has been commented.

I don't understand why this is not translated.

@Simon44
Some strings are not included in Q4OS translation subsystem yet. They will be included later, we are working on that, thanks for the note.

Re: How can you help translate Q4OS to your language

I'm willing to contribute to the translation of `q4os-i18n/q4os-tools/fr/desktop-profiler.po` and I have some preliminary questions, because I see several oddities in it.

Label beside the Full profile icon:
- the msgid is commented out
- the msgstr has a translation and is also commented out

Label beside the Basic profile icon:
- the msgid is commented out and its content is different from the string displayed in the app (the first word "The")
- the msgstr has a translation is also commented out

Label beside the pure profile icon:
- no msgid nor msgstr is present -> untranslatable?

Descriptions of the profiles:
- no msgid nor msgstr is present -> untranslatable?

A lot of other msgid/msgstr are also commented out.

Several translations are marked to review ("fuzzy" keyword) and don't appear in the app.

Hence these questions:

1. Are the .po files the same for Q4OS 4 and Q4OS 5 and should I take care of the difference? (I'm using Q4OS 4.)

2. Can I / should I use a simple text editor to uncomment the commented lines and provide a translation?

3. Is it worth and can I use a simple text editor to add missing msgid/msgstr strings? (Too bad to stay with some untranslated parts, but I doubt very much it can be done this way.)

4. Once I have worked on the translation, is there a way I can test the result in Profile Manager?

Re: How can you help translate Q4OS to your language

1. Yes, they are exactly the same, no difference

2. No, don't translate strings commented out. They are present for a possible revive only.

3. We strongly recommend to use poedit app, however using text editor is possible.

4. Yes, you need to compile .po files to .mo and replace existing in the "/opt/trinity/share/locale/<your_locale>/LC_MESSAGES/" folder

We are now preparing new Desktop profiler version containing extensive changes, so the localization gets significant updates too. It should be available in a few weeks. So consider to wait for this new release.

Re: How can you help translate Q4OS to your language

Thanks for your answers.
I just gave poedit a try to translate some strings, to compile the .po file and to test the .mo file. Everything seems to work well.
Waiting for the new version before going further.
