Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

So not a major issue, but I couldn't find how to set Trinity to only use the external monitor when docked and disable the onboard.  I use a docking station as my second desktop, and while I don't really NEED to be able to use my Q4OS machine on there, I certainly wouldn't mind.  Is this possible to set it so it works normally when off the dock, but when booted on the dock it disables the onboard LCD and only uses the external (I want the onboard disabled instead of mirrored because the external is 1080P, while the onboard is only 720P)?  And where my docking station is, I literally cannot open it more than about 2" due to space restraints, so I can't use extended desktop.

Re: Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

If you go to Control Centre -> System Administration -> Monitor & Display then enable "Enable global display control" (disabled by default) and then you can create a different profile for when the laptop is docked to when it is not, but I am not really sure exactly how to get it to use the right profile at the right time as I have never had need for this type of setting. I'm sure you will either figure it out from there of maybe someone else has some extra info for that although I would imagine it would be something to do with the "Hotplug Rules".

Re: Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

Thats odd as I use a docking station with my E5410 and it immediately adapts to my external monitor and returns to original settings when Im using the laptop separately.  Onboard display is disabled and output adapts to whatever monitor I use.  I dont have global display control enabled.

Id still try what Dai describes and see what happens.

Re: Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

So after reinstalling to do EUFI + GPT instead of MBR, I've got it back up.  Same issue at first, the global display control worked!  Sort of.

So now, when I boot off the dock, I get a normal 1366x768 with no issues.

When I boot on the dock, I get the CLI.  systemctl shows tdm running.  If I systemctl stop tdm.service && systemctl start tdm.service tdm then actually DOES launch and I can login and continue, and it works EXACTLY like I want.  But it no longer launches upon boot on the dock even though it starts.

Odd...any ideas?

That's pretty strange and I would imagine it would need some investigation by the devs as they would be in a better place to make suggestions for this issue...
Is it an original dock (from the manufacturer) or an "after market" one?

Yes, we will try to investigate it.

@tlmiller76
It would be helpful to provide the system journal log. Please boot laptop in the dock, login to CLI and run in console:
$ sudo journalctl > journal.log && tar czf journal.tgz journal.log
and attach 'journal.tgz' here

Very, and when I undid everything I changed...it still boots to cli when docked.  So whatever happened to cause it, isn't undone by reversing the changes.

Not something Ive seen before and curious to see what the devs think.

Very.  It's definitely reproducible, as it happened before I reinstalled, but then I didn't bother with it when I saw that this supported UEFI boot.  But then, it happened after the reinstall again, so no idea.  But working FANTSTIC when off the dock.  Faster than I ever though this old a laptop could run anymore!

Re: Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

Its a great laptop even given its age. It shows the quality of tech these days when much older hardware can still run recent apps with great performance.

Thats why I buy behind the curve as my main pc can still play most games with excellent performance and apps run great.

Re: Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

We are not able to guess from the journal.log what's going on, so we would need some more logs. Please boot in dock and run in terminal:
$ cd /var/log
$ tar czf ~/log2.tgz tdm.log Xorg*.log
and attach 'log2.tgz' here.

Re: Docked disable LCD and use only external monitor

I actually ended up bringing the laptop back to work and put it back in our recycling pile.  The 1366x768 resolution of the LCD finally got to where I couldn't tolerate it anymore even for playing around.

Ive done that many times when I simply get fed up with issues that many times cant be resolved.
