Installing Slimjet

Can anyone tell me how to install Slimjet browser...? It's not in the repository,so I downloaded it from their website. I selected the 32 Deb. file. Once it Dlded, it didn't start. I assume that I have to use the command console, which I did.sudo apt-get installfile:///home/adminq/Documents/slimjet_i386. It's telling me this command is incorrect. Can anyone tell me which way is better...? Should I be using Ark...? If so, how would I install it using Ark...? Thanks.

I just downloaded to test and this was my procedure...

1.) download .deb file for architecture
2.) install using sudo dpkg -i /path/to/slimjet.deb (use correct file name for your download)
3.) the procedure fails due to dependencies so we have to run sudo apt-get -f install to install them
4.) from the command line you can type flashpeak-slimjet to start it. Et Voila.

there is a desktop file for giving a menu option but it probably needs a reboot (or maybe just logout and back in) to show (probably... not tested but I noticed the desktop file in /usr/share/applications)

Slimjet is very nice and a great alternative to Chromium/Chrome.

I tried sudo dpkg -i /path/to/slimjet.deb Command not found. Also tried $ sudo dpkg -i /path/to/slimjet. Error processing archive /path/to/slimjet (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory.Also tried $ sudo apt-get -f install flashpeak-slimjet
said "Reading package lists... Done" I have the slimjet.deb file saved to my documents.
I'm not following you....but then again, I'm a total novice at command line....

Is this for the Pentium 3 system you mentioned? It wont work as pentium 3 is a non-SSE2 cpu and isnt compatible with Slimjet. Chrome,Firefox and Chromium wont work either. Pentium 4s were the start of SSE2 optimized Intel cpus.

When you said Chromium wouldnt work it got me thinking as Chromium works fine with Pentium 4 and newer processors.

That's weird....it had Chromium on it before. What will work on it,besides Firefox...? It runs really slow,even with all the FF tweaks....I've tried Midori....I don't like it. Opera..?

It was probably an older version of Chromium but there arent any browsers Im aware of that will run with a non-SSE2 cpu. All youll get is a warning about incorrect or illegal instruction, if it works at all.

Only older versions of browsers that dont require SSE2, Firefox 49 I think was the last one, dont know about Chromium. The problem there is security issues and some online features wont work properly if at all. A lot of apps require SSE2 as well. Thank god for HTML5 as Flash requires SSE2.

I found one browser that should work called Netsurf and some of my friends over on the Ubuntu forums tried it.

Look here www.netsurf-browser.org Its the only one any of us can find that seems to work with SSE cpus.

Ive never used nor installed it for Linux so not sure how easy it is to get installed.

I'll give it a shot. Have you ever tried Puffin.? It might only work with Android. What about Pale Moon...?

Pale Moon went to SSE2 and Puffin is Android only.

Pale Moon has 2 external builds by Mercury that support non SSE 2 processors. You can find them on their main page with other downloads. Gecko also supports non SSE 2 computers. I tried Pale Moon before,and I kinda liked it. Sea Monkey also has a non SSE 2 download,but I never liked it. I will try Net Surf. It looks similar to Slim jet. I'll let you know if/how these work.

Just spotted the external builds for Pale Moon(is it well supported?) as they promote themselves as SSE2 only now. Sea Monkey 2.4 was the last version to support SSE but theyve moved to SSE2. Gecko is a web engine so it depends on the browsers support as to whether SSE will work.

NetSurf is a true multi-platform browser so they arent relying on SSE2.

Well,,anything is faster than FF on that old machine. I'll try Net Surf first, and let you know how it works. I would like to install 2 other browsers on that unit. Just in case FF quits working.

Which FF are you using? Older version? Older versions of FF are much slower. Pale Moon and Netsurf are really the only two options unless you want to use the older version of Sea Monkey.

Just out of curiosity,why do you want to continue using a Pentium 3 system? I use them still but with Windows 98SE for older gaming with 3DFX cards.

Whichever version is with Orion 1.8.8 The one that just came out on 9/14/17.Just keeping this as a backup in case of an emergency...storing files,mostly. Have you ever used Qt web browser...?

Ive never used Qtweb but given what Ive read it might be ok with SSE, not sure.

So Firefox ESR 52 works with your system interesting. Im not running 1.8.8 anymore but pretty sure its 52 ESR.

Yes...that's it..! 52 ESR...so far, I have not got the SSE warning yet....I'll let you know how all of it works, tomorrow.

Did you download the .deb file or the .tar.gz file?

Assuming you have the .deb file... Try installing with the filename slimjet_i386.deb (I just downloaded to check the filename) navigate to your downloaded file (default installation would be ~/Documents/) and then issue the command...

sudo dpkg -i slimjet_i386.deb

Then follow these two instructions

Slimjet wont work as it requires SSE2 and the pentium 3 is SSE.

Yes, but as he had chromium on it before I thought it was worth trying, you never know... The error Command not found after the sudo dpkg -i... command led me to think maybe he made a typo when issuing it.

No...wish it were so..but this machine won't do anything with Slimjet. Since it's a pentium 3, I did alot of checking and CC is right. I'm off to Dld Net Surf...

You could also try to use 'konqueror' browser from kde4 suite. Just install it from regular repositories:
$ sudo apt-get install konqueror
Note, it will want to pull a lot of kde4/qt4 dependencies.

Dai, he had an older version of Chromium that still supported SSE but thats gone in recent versions.

Curious to see what NetSurf is like.
