Q4OS running fine on a old HP Compaq Pentium D

Hello guys!

Until then I had only used Q4OS on Raspberry Pi 3, and recently resurrected an old HP Compaq desktop (Pentium D, 1 GB RAM and 80 GB HD) and installed Q4OS 1.8.7 for testing.

The result is very good! System is pretty fast. I'm enjoying the experience.

I'm just wondering what would be the best version for this type of machine... I got one more 512 MB DDR2 memory cartridge, so the computer now has 1.5 GB of RAM.

I know that with only 1 GB the recomposed would be the 32bit (x86) version, and that with 2GB the 64bit version would already be satisfactory... But what about the exact 1.5GB of RAM?

At the moment I'm using Q4OS 1.8.7 x64 (64bit) and so far I have nothing to complain about... Maybe the memory consumption may be slightly larger than the x86 version, but it's running fine!

What is your opinion? X64 or x86 for this machine with 1.5GB of RAM?

Greetings!

Rafael

Re: Q4OS running fine on a old HP Compaq Pentium D

I usually use the "best" version for the hardware, in this case it would be the 64 bit version (IMO) as I imagine it would make better use of the hardware available. There are many users who still prefer to use the 32 bit version on some older 64 bit machines and I think if you already have it running with no issues then that is what I would stick with.
Just my opinion though and others may have a different point of view. smile

Id use 32bit myself as it uses less ram and overall will perform better with the Pentium D even though its certainly 64bit capable. Since youve got the 64bit version installed Id leave it and see how it does.
