I've installed skype and it seems to work ok with chat and video but the other user can't hear me so it must be microphone problem. Any hints on how to test the mic or get it working? Thanks.
edit: Fixed. I installed pavucontrol and found that the mic was muted.

Jerome - I installed skype when I installed Q4OS (many months ago) and never had any problem with it. Maybe hardware made the difference.
I'm glad you got it working!!

Well, I have a issue with a mic in Skype, too. But my case is more complex.
I have installed pavucontrol, too. The mic is not muted. But there in pavicontrol I see two input devices: Built-in Audio and web-camera. I have a mic only built-in to a web camera and no mic connected to line input. Camera's mic does not work until I select 'Stereo Output' profile instead of 'Stereo duplex' profile for the built-in audio on the last tab ('Config') of the Pavucontrol settings. After that, a 'Buil-in Audio' input device disapears and the mic does work. But all is Ok just until restart the system. :-( Seems my settings are not saving. So I need change 'Analog Stereo Duplex' profile to 'Analog Stereo Output' each time after restart the system.

@crosscourt
Thank you for very useful links!
But my case is not to force USB mic to work (it can be done several ways, I tried all of them including pasystray but excluding replace pulseaudio with esound ), the problem is that after reboot, pulseaudio does not recall the changes I made. :-(
After reboot all PA settings become as they were before my intervention.
