Some points to solve

Hi. To point out I have noticed that using firefox browser Ram memory consumption increases significantly more than in other graphical interfaces. I think it is a critical aspect that must be resolved. It increases cumulatively the memory by making it very heavy. Another detail, some external devices like Mp3 player are not detected. I dont know if this is for de desktop enviroment itself but  i  doubt is due to Debian the OS base. Because i had tryed  another Debian distro base and all is ok. For to give additional information in web browser ( to the friends here)  try to get Palemoon browser,  this can consume less memory  and is more fast compare to Firefox.

Re: Some points to solve

Go here for help with the memory consumption issues with Firefox,  https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fi … memory-ram
Firefox 54 so far is remarkably good with memory usage so far on my test systems.

What devices are you having issues with? What version of Q4OS are you using and did you install it with the full desktop profile?
If youre using Orion 1.8.6 the most recent version your using the older 3.16 kernel which may not support some devices and newer systems.

It could be your missing some necessary packages that are needed for devices to work properly.

The other Debian based distro you mentioned that worked may have had more packages installed initially or a newer kernel.

I havent had any major issues with Firefox but I also use Chrome when needed, if problems arise.
I find Palemoon and Firefox perform about the same on my system both in regards to speed and memory usage.

Re: Some points to solve

I have been using palemoon for the past month or so as I had also noticed FF seems to be using more resources and was becoming increasingly slower, it can be temporarily restored by removing the .mozilla/firefox folder but that of course will remove all your preferences etc so a pain to set back up again, although you can backup a few files to keep your preferences and then restore them after restarting FF. But I chose palemoon as it (so far) doesn't gradually slow down and use too much resources.
Just my current preference and I'm sure there are other browsers that are just as good but I'll be sticking with palemoon for now. smile

Re: Some points to solve

Which version of Firefox are you using Dai?  I havent had those issues and most of my systems use between 4-8gb of ram so its not really an issue overall with memory usage. I limit plugins and have hardware accel turned off.

On my system the difference between Palemoon and Firefox is minimal after measuring overall memory usage in a similar set of circumstances.

Chrome for me by far is a much faster browser than firefox even though I dont use it, Chromium for those of you who dont care to deal with Chrome.

Fastest browser overall is Opera in regards to memory usage vs performance.

FF version 53.0.3 although I did notice there is an update to version 54, but I probably will just remove it for the time being until I get problems with palemoon and decide to change again big_smile

Re: Some points to solve

Firefox 54 runs really well but heres some stats to show you what I mean.

Same internet usage visiting the same 10 sites , all with similar settings on the same system all 64bit, most recent versions, finishing here on the Q4OS site.

Firefox 54- 515mb
Firefox 53- 543mb
Palemoon- 535mb
Chrome-     397mb
Chromium- 400mb

Overall feel and performance with Firefox/Palemoon seems the same but when changing to Chrome the speed is obvious as the system is much quicker, with pages loading much quicker. A friend of mine did some testing on how fast pages load with various browsers and Chrome has always been far quicker on average 30%.

That said I also prefer Firefox overall but also use Opera, Chrome and Midori depending on the system. Midori is far lighter than any of these browsers.

Same test above, Midori uses 228mb.

Re: Some points to solve

One thing that was a major factor in me changing browser was the time to load/start which increases significantly with FF compared to palemoon after regular use and having quite a few bookmarks and ad blocker installed, and each page in FF was taking longer to start compared to palemoon, again after regular usage. I think the time differences I am talking about are more to do with the way FF logs/stores every detail of your usage and as the logs grow the speeds get slower (reminiscent of MS!) and that is the (main) reason for my change as palemoon (so far) hasn't had the "lag" that FF suffers from.

Re: Some points to solve

I have used Seamonkey very happily for a number of years - Netscape Internet Suite anyone???
Memory usage is pretty much on a par at 515mb with this window open (but of course the email checker is running in background as well)

You can do some interesting stuff with tmpfs which does speed up moz based browsers - there's a small cost because you're mounting the ./mozilla folder in RAM so you don't get the benefit of new cached content. I have found that by doing this and running Seamonkey/Firefox/Thunderbird as a startup item (depends on mood as to which) it does take a few more moments to complete boot but after that the relevant browser is much faster.

As I'm sure I'll be told, it does rely on having more than 1gb of RAM but as with everything YMMV

fstab additional lines

tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0
tmpfs      /home/username/.cache/mozilla/        tmpfs      defaults,noatime        0    0

The first line is there anyway as it benefits both SSD and spinner for different reasons.

That could be interesting, I might try that as it could make it more bearable to use FF, Thanks bin smile

Re: Some points to solve

I turn off unneeded apps at boot to reduce memory usage and running Firefox in private browser mode also reduces resource usage.

I remember those days bin with Netscape.  I ran my first video game website on Compuserve.

Re: Some points to solve

I just use Slim jet... It seems to load a lot faster than FF and you don't have to put up with ads....for those of you using a tablet...try Puffin as a browser...super fast for "droid" based phones/tablets

Re: Some points to solve

Slimjet resource usage is in the same range as Firefox so even though it seems to run faster in fact memory usage is pretty much alike.

Dropping unneeded plugins in Firefox will also help.

Re: Some points to solve

I have Chromium,Slim jet, and FF downloaded as browsers. I'll give Opera another try. When I was first in search of a distro(before I found Q4OS) I was trying Puppy Linux, which used Opera. I didn't really like Puppy Linux so I didn't get to use it much. It deserves another look.

Re: Some points to solve

Opera has about the same resource usage as Chrome/Chromium, but just a bit lower, 375mb in my testing.

Slimjet and FF around 515mb.
