The first x64 build of Thunderbird 52 for Q4OS is available for download here https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … erimental/ , file 'setup_thunderbird-tb1_1.1-a1_amd64.esh'.
We recommend to completely uninstall former TB installations and backup data, folder '$HOME/.thunderbird', for sure. Actually, new TB should use existing data.

It would actually have been better, if only offering one version, to offer 32bit, as it can be run by both 32/64bit systems.

The new Thunderbird-52 installer is available for download from here https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … erimental/ , file 'setup_thunderbird-tb1_1.1-a2_all.esh'

This installer will install 64bit or 32bit TB version, depending on present CPU architecture.

Will the installer install the new Thunderbird version over the top of the current version or is it still recommended that the old version be deleted prior to installing the new version?

It will install new version over the old one. Nonetheless, we would recommend to uninstall the old version for sure. Just run in terminal:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove thunderbird

Thank you for the instruction which worked perfectly, apart from the fact that I copied and pasted $ sudo apt-get autoremove thunderbird from your post into the terminal, when I should have simply pasted sudo apt-get autoremove thunderbird.

I also received a nice surprise when I installed the new version of Thunderbird because, despite removing the old version, I did not have to reinstall my e-mail accounts after I installed the new version and, more importantly, I managed to connect to my Gmail account without any trouble with the Google login.

A common mistake that many users make, and I did a few times when learning Linux

Just for any users who might not understand why this is relevant, often when commands are given for the terminal a $ usually means the command should be run as normal user (although in this case the user acted as root with the use of sudo) and a # means it should be run as root (or by using sudo).

Thank you for your advice and assistance.

I am pleased to report that getting Thunderbird 52.1.0 up and running has allowed me to switch to q4OS for my primary OS. I will still keep Windows for those applications that require it but, for my day to day computing, I now rely on q4OS.
