Does anyone have any information on when Q4OS is likely to make available Thunderbird 52.1.0. because the current version has a problem with connecting to Gmail accounts?

You can just download the tar file from Mozilla site and extract it to your home folder and then either run it from the command line or create a link on the desktop and run it from there. As far as I can tell you will only need to do this to log in to your gmail account the first time (for verification) and then you should be able to use the distro version to resume normal email operations, or continue with the newer version whichever is your preference.

It is not likely that the newer versions will be available in Orion, although when Scorpion becomes stable I think the devs are planning to make the latest versions available via the software centre.

I had the same issue and am still using the newer version from Mozilla

For the avoidance of doubt, can I expect to see the release of the latest version of Thunderbird for Orion in the near future?

I don't beleive it will re-appear in Orion, it's too close to Scorpion (Stretch) going stable to warrant the work involved, and the devs will undoubtedly be busy making sure Scorpion will transition well.

Thats one of the advantages to GMail as you dont need a third party email client to access it. Makes a lot more sense to wait for Scorpion going stable.

I assume, but want to make sure, that Orion will upgrade to Scorpion when Scorpion is stable. Or at least will we be given the option to auto upgrade?

Should be possible but there will be a lot of obsolete packages to deal with given the amount of new software with Debian 9.

You can have this by adding http://downloads.sourceforge.net/projec … zilla/apt/ all main

This allows you to install and update the Thunderbird Mozilla Build and Firefox Mozillla Build clients via Synaptic like any other - you do have to remove current versions first. If you're using icedove then you may need to re-name ./icedove to ./thunderbird

No, we intend to provide the latest Thunderbird ESR (extended support release) for Orion and latest regular Thunderbird for Scorpion in the future. Nonetheless, we are not able to promise a deadline just now. It should be available in a couple of months after the Scorpion becomes stable.

Given that I have already set up Thunderbird (Linux) and transitioned my other e-mail accounts across from Thunderbird (Windows), I would naturally prefer not having to remove Thunderbird (Linux) and to wait for Scorpion.

Clearly, my plan to obtain a version of Thunderbird (Linux) that is compatible with Gmail is dependent on being able to upgrade to Scorpian and installing Thunderbird in a manner that will retain my existing settings.

Does anybody see a flaw in my intended course of action or, to put it another way, can this be done?

And don't forget the most obvious course of action is to create a backup before-hand to ensure that even in the worst case scenario you can still retain all of your data. I might be stating the obvious here but I thought it worthy of a reminder to anyone else reading

I'm puzzled - I have been using T'bird with gmail accounts since at least 2012 on all sorts of different Linux distros.

Can I be of help with your problem?

Thank you for your concern but the problem appears to have arisen quite recently and is shown below:

The solution is upgrading to Thunderbird 52.1.0 (or a beta version), which can be done either immediately, as set out earlier in this thread, or waiting for the release of Scorpion and installing via Synaptic.

In my case, given that I can access my Gmail account through Thunderbird (Windows) and would prefer not having to remove Thunderbird (Linux) in order to upgrade Thunderbird (Linux), I have decided to wait for Scorpion.

Thanks CC, and I try to make sure all my backup strategies are completed, but I do occaisionally think "Ahh what the heck I'll leave it today" and then wake up early and do it straight away, just in case...

I made a mistake when upgrading a distro that I had already tried on an other pc and it worked fine. The second try went south and i lost some dats so even when its a sure thing I backup.

Thank you for the information but my experience is that the same problem is still encountered with the app specific password.

Has anybody recently installed a version of Thunderbird (less than 52.1.0.) on Linux and successfully accessed their Gmail account using a Google generated app specific password?

Based on the community request, we have decided to compile Thunderbird 52 specifically for Q4OS Orion and include it into the Software centre as soon as possible. We guess, it should be available in a few days.

That is excellent news - will it simply upgrade my exisiting Linux version and retain all my settings so that I can complete my transition from Windows?

Yes, it's intended to, but we are not able to promise that for now. If not, there will be a necessity to backup and uninstall the old TB version and configure the new one from scratch.

Normally your ~./thunderbird folder is all that is required for configuration.

If you make a backup for safety sake it would be a good idea, but normally a new installation will quite happily read and work from your existing config. I have carried my current config for 5 years - renaming to icedove along the way as needed, and it has only caused a problem once where I found the distro installed version of t'bird was too old and it broke one of the sql files. That was a bit of an edge case and certainly going from 48 to 52 would present no problems. If you install and start t'bird it will create a new config folder in your home if one does not exist. If you are going to use a backup version then simply delete the version created by the new installation - don't just copy yours over the top or you may run into profile issues.
