I have run many desktops but the only ones that stay a while are TDE and Xfce, I did use mate for a while but I get so annoyed having to remember all the different ways to change settings on the desktops that I soon clear it off. I really like the look and feel of the KDE desktop but there are so many other things about it that I don't like I end up removing that pretty quickly too (as soon as I'm reminded why I don't use it )

Use to be a big KDE user and still enjoy it but too many issues to deal with. Love MATE and once you get use to it, its as easy as XFCE but not quite as light.

I think the perfect de does not exist, only the one you like the best, which is a personal choice, thats the beauty of linux, the choice.
Because I prefer old hardware, "taking discarded laptops too slow for windows" and making a fast solid system with linux, I tend to go for lightweight, XFCE, openbox, jwm, but trinity feels much like XFCE to me and feels just as responsive.
I suspect that most users pick the distro and stick with the DE, mint and others offer a choice but adds to the burden for developers.

Totally agree as the perfect DE doesnt exist and and ts all about what works best for you. From a pure resource usage point of view some DE's are much better choices due to their low memory footprint and quickness, which is what attracted many people to TDE.
With older hardware I prefer LXDE,TDE,Openbox and JWM.
I work to reduce memory usage overall and even KDE 5 in my most recent install only uses 369mb at boot which is amazing. Overall the best blend of being a full featured DE versus being lightweight and responsive goes to XFCE in my opinion.

Ive always been a fan of Mate and probably use it the most of any DE so far.

I prefer the Trinity DE, but I've been pleased as well at how well Cinnamon runs on my Q4OS system.

Trinity is a very comfortable DE to use but havent tried Cinnamon on Q4OS yet, Hows the resource usage with Cinnamon?
