Re: New PC

IMO, it's far too large to like.  But that's me.  I hate anything larger than 14" laptops.  I also personally would be driven nuts by a 17" screen with that low resolution (1600x900), it would have all the icons and text FAR too large for my tastes.  At 17" laptops, I need 1080P at the bare minimum to use, QHD preferred.

But that's me, you might not be so picky.

As far as the hardware is concerned, it'll run q4os great.  I had q4os installed on a SIMILAR spec machine for a while, and it absolutely flew.  Big thing to find out is what wireless chipset it uses, as that's going to be the single likeliest spot where you might run into issues, although even then, there's very few that are currently made that WON'T work, some are just more of a pain than others.

You will PROBABLY need to use backports kernel + backports firmware-intel-sound to get sound working.  No guarantees, but most of the "budget" broadwell machines use the same sound chip and it's not supported in the 3.16 line at all.

One of the good things is that the issue with Broadwell & 4.8 kernels (shutdown/poweroff/halt/reboot/etc didn't work) had been fixed in the 4.8.15 kernel, which is what the backports kernel just recently moved to, so it shouldn't have issues with power control if you do run backports kernel.

If it has an SD-Card slot, you might find that DOESN'T work after upgrading kernel to backports though.  I have found that no Broadwell based machine (strangely the last I tried Haswell still worked, and SkyLake works, I don't own anything KabyLake to test with) that I've tried will properly use the SDCard slots with 4.6+ kernels (still present in 4.9), although it does work in 3.16.  This might be a reason to stay with the 3.16 if SD Card is important (for me it's not, I try every couple months just to test if it's been fixed yet).

Re: New PC

If the resolution works for you and you don't mind the size, I'd get it.  Any hardware issues you run into can be worked through, I have a LOT of experience with Broadwell laptops (I have 3 of them, and in fact am typing this on one), and with the exception of the SD-CARD issues I mentioned since I don't really ever use them, am quite familiar with how to get anything Broadwell to play nice.

Since it has ethernet, EVEN IF it has a not-so-linux-friendly wireless chipset, you'd be able to connect via that to get the wireless up and running.  Everything else is simple after getting the wireless working (and since it comes with linux preinstalled, most likely is Intel wireless, which works 100% out of the box).

Re: New PC

Took a quick look at ebay france, and yeah, that laptop seems to be a pretty good deal.  the only deal I could find as good or better (given your wants) was on a laptop that wouldn't recognize the battery...
