windows exceed screen width

Ok, maybe the topic title ain't the right way to say it....but....

I have my display setup for 1024 X 768. I prefer to not go higher due to my eyesight. (selection 004 below)

The problem occurs when I right click a file and select to open it with other than the listed. Like to open an html file with kwrite. When I do that the [CANCEL] [OK] buttons are off screen to the right and I have to drag the window to the left to select them.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the width of these windows? I have tried resizing them by trying to drag the right side, but cannot do so.

Re: windows exceed screen width

Hi, Jim!

Not sure about setting a default size to these windows, but, I have assigned a Hot-Key to quickly Maximize/Minimize active windows.  This saves me the trouble of having to move the windows around when I face similar situations.

If you want to try this, you can set the hot-keys under Settings -> Accessibility -> Keyboard Shortcuts

Hope this helps.

David.

Re: windows exceed screen width

Your resolution 1024 X 768 is ok. Please describe exact steps to reproduce the issue. Is konqueror the only application, which does it so ? Did you try to manually resize the window, just seize the window corner with mouse and drag it to decrease the window size ?

Re: windows exceed screen width

konqueror is the only one I have tried. It is what I normally use. I'll try to attach a short screen capture. When I go to the top right and the cursor becomes an angled double arrow I attempt to move to the left with no effect, however it does allow changing of the height. Going to the top left and attempting to move to the right also has no effect.
Hope the video works!! smile

Re: windows exceed screen width

Which action did you perform to get this overflowing window ? Please describe exactly, as we are not able to reproduce it anyhow.

In addition, try to move the window a bit away from the left screen border first, and then position cursor to the left edge of the window to resize it.

Re: windows exceed screen width

The cause probably found. There could be some exceeding path in the history combo-box remaining. Please try to edit file '$HOME/.trinity/share/config/konquerorrc' and completely remove line 'History' from '[Open-with settings]' section. Login again and check, if window opens correctly now.

Re: windows exceed screen width

Ok, that didn't fix it. Thanks for the suggestion anyway!

However, krusader does not have the same problem. Also, switching to another user konqueror works fine. can I copy the konquerorrc from another user and paste it in my normal user? Or should I re-install konqueror?

Do not reinstall in any case, that would not help.

Yes, you could try to do that. You could also completely remove 'konquerorrc' file, we would recommend to backup it first for possible restore.

smile I learned that lesson a long time ago! smile

It will be a bit before I can experiment more. Real life things to do!
As soon as I get the chance I'll try the copy/paste and if it does not work then I'll try the delete.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: windows exceed screen width

Do not forget to logout/login immediately after 'konquerorrc' editing. The better way would be to logout from gui first, 'update 'konquerorrc' in tty console terminal and then login again.

Re: windows exceed screen width

OK!!!
The copy/paste fixed it!
I copied the file from other user folder to the .trinity/share/config/ with a modified name (basically added .new to the end) - ctrl/alt/F1 - logged in - cd to .trinity/share/config/ folder - moved old file to a .bak and then moved the .new to the original name - sudo reboot - and it worked!!

Thanks guys! (and any ladies too!!)

Re: windows exceed screen width

Would it be possible to paste the differences from the two config files here, for curiosity sake. smile
you can get this from the command line by typing

diff ~/.trinity/share/config/konquerorrc.bak ~/.trinity/share/config/konquerorrc

Re: windows exceed screen width

Ok Dai

I used diff konquerorrc konquerorrc.bac > konqdiff.txt

Re: windows exceed screen width

After a look through your diff file (thanks for posting) it appears the problem is likely caused by the setting KonqMainWindow_Size as it is set beyond your screen size. On my laptop it shows this, where the first figure on each line is the maximum screen size and the second figure is the last saved state.

[KonqMainWindow_Size]
Height 768=591
Width 1366=1269

I noticed from the diff file that yours looked like this

[KonqMainWindow_Size]
Height 900=456
Width 1600=640

and it is now showing

[KonqMainWindow_Size]
Height 800=456
Width 1280=640

which is still outside your preferred desktop size and I would imagine the problem might arise again if a long file path were put into your history. I would set these (first figures on each line) to width 1024 and height 768 to hopefully prevent it happening.

Re: windows exceed screen width

Ok, that problem came back. I've waited to see if I have it fixed now. It seems like I do.
I tried Dai's suggestion of setting the height and width. That worked for less than 1 day and the wide view came back.
Finally I deleted the konquerorrc file and rebooted. The issue has not re-occurred for about 2 days, so, hopefully, that fixed it!
At least I know what to do if it happens again. Maybe then I can determine what caused it to start with!

Re: windows exceed screen width

It might be worth taking a copy of the konquerorrc file and then if the problem comes back do a diff check to see what has changed.
