download links for old releases ?

hello everybody,

i am wondering if there are download links for old releases of Q4OS, especially the ones that are still based on debian 7.*
i did not see any link for such old releases on Q4OS website.

Support for Q4OS 0.5 branch has expired and its repositories are not maintained anymore. Installation would not work quite well, as there could be some broken dependencies and uresolved, mainly TDE, bugs.

unfortunately, the latest release (1.6.3 32-bit) does not work on my old laptop made in 2005 (single core pentium m / 1.5 gb ram / geforce 6600 go).
i think i am way too late to use this awesome OS.

Your hardware specification is more than sufficient for Q4OS 1.6 to run on. We could try to assist you to get it to work, if you let some more info here.

this laptop's specifications :

toshiba satellite M40 model PSM40L-02N00C
pentium M 730 CPU (1.6 ghz, single core)
1.5 gbytes DDR1 PC2700 RAM
geforce go 6600 64 mbytes GPU (NV43M)
60 gb fujitsu IDE HDD

installation was successful, no error message.
but when booting, the last scrolling text message i saw was : "system logging", then the screen went blank. it did not go to common GUI login screen.

actually, the same thing happened on this laptop with other distros as well, except :
- lmde 1
- robolinux 7.9.2
- galpon minino picaros 2015.01

newer ubuntu and debian-based distros, including lmde 2, robolinux 8.* failed to install as well.
the information on robolinux website (https://www.robolinux.org/downloads/) says :
"Compatibility Warning: Some PC's & Laptops with video cards manufactured before 2008 are no longer supported in the Robolinux 8 Raptor series LTS 2020 (i.e. Debian 8). However the Robolinux series 7 Operating Systems LTS 2018 do still support these old video cards."

so i concluded this might be a debian 8 compatibility issue (CMIIW).

Are you able to switch to console terminal pressing ctrl+alt+f1 key combination ?

- If not so, you will have to enter into 'failsave' mode - tap 'esc' key during computer start, grub boot table will appear. Go to 'Advanced options ..' -> '... revovery mode'.
Run in console:
# Xorg -configure
# cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
edit the video driver line: 'driver nv' or 'driver nouveau' - replace it with 'driver vga'
press ctrl+o to save the file and 'ctrl+x' to exit editor
# reboot
Now you should be able to enter a terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 key combination

Login into console terminal and run:
$ nvidia-detect
if there is a recommended nvidia driver, install it, for example:
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver
$ sudo reboot

Let a result here, please.

yes, i am able to switch to text-based terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+f1 keys.

q4os-desktop login: ---> i am logging in with my username
Password: ----> my password

but i cannot login as root, "su" command asked a password, but when i inputted my password, it said: "su: Authentification failure"

so i typed that nvidia command using my own user login :

$nvidia-detect
Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300] NVIDIA Corporation NV43M [Geforce Go 6600] [10de:0148] (rev a2)
Your card is only supported up to the 304 legacy drivers series.

It is recommended ...... (when i was typing this post from another computer, laptop's screen went blank again, i had not finished reading the rest message yet)

edit:
i pressed ctrl+alt+f1 again, and the screen is displaying the texts again, it says:

It is recommended to install the
nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver
package.

and the rest message are the same as previous lengthy message with hexadecimal numbers, more or less.

Well, try to switch to second console 'ctrl+alt+f2' to avoid error messages and type in the terminal:
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig -s
$ sudo reboot
and let a result here.

If you would need a root access, type:
$ sudo su

i got this output with error messages :

You'd need a network connection unless that driver is on the live media. Wifi possibly not working at this point?
Can you connect with a network cable to your router?

In addition, you may also need to update packages list before driver installation:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig -s
$ sudo reboot

i connected to the network with ethernet cable to make sure internet is accessible, then i did as you wrote :
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig -s
$ sudo reboot

the result, now it is able to boot but it does not display the GUI login screen, but a text-based login prompt instead.
i am able to login with my username. now, what should i do, it is still in a text-based environment ?

Looks like some kind of Debian bug. Do next terminal commands help somehow ?
$ sudo modprobe --force nvidia
$ sudo systemctl restart tdm-trinity.service

If not, you could remove the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file:
$ sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf'
reboot and attach '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' again here to analyze.

There is a mess in commands to install nvidia stuff, sorry for that. The proper commands should be as follows:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get -s install nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver nvidia-xconfig
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig -s
$ sudo reboot

Unfortunately, the best solution would be to start from clean Q4OS installation. Alternatively, it would be possible to try uninstallation of all nvidia packages, but it could make things more complicated. If you would want to try the uninstallation method, please run:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove nvidia-*
Hopefully, uninstallation will pass correctly, then you could run the right commands above.

Edit: removed 'nvidia-settings-legacy-304xx' package, as installed automatically.
