Arts output crashes right when I login. I get a notfication that arts has crashed, and it askes me if I want to keep trying or let the disable the sound, both of which end up with the same result: No sound and a lagging laptop.

I have had this happen to me a couple of times, but a reboot usually sorts it out. I would make sure the system is fully updated (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade), reboot, and then see if it continues.

Okay thanks I'll try those commands
Edit: I have pasted the commands in the terminal. Now I'm trying a reboot...
Edit:Edit: That didn't work. I still get the message:
During the previous startup, KNotify crashed while instantiating KNotify. Do you want to try again or disable aRts sound output?
If you choose to disable aRts output now, you can re-enable it later or select an alternate sound player in the System Notifications control panel.
Edit:Edit:Edit: After another reboot, the volume icon doesn't show up. I start it maually, but it doesn't show up.

I can only suggest going through these instructions and hopefully you will get it back working again.

Please could you let us know what laptop this is?
Intel or AMD chipset?
What wifi card does it use?
Have you added Pulse since installation?
The reason I ask is that I have run into audio problems with kernel 3.16 and Broadcom wifi with Pulse installed - some kind of clash...

@Dai_Trying, Hey, that worked, Thanks!
@bin, here are the specs:
Acer Aspire 5810TZ-4657
Chipset Type
Mobile Intel GS45 Express
Unable to find what wifi card it uses.
And yes I do have Pulse installed

You're welcome
And if you want an easy way to see your system details you could install inxi from the repositories and then simply type in a terminal inxi -F and you will get some useful information.

Thank you. Now I got a new problem. Sound works fine, but only for the system. Mozilla, Vlc, or anything else doesn't have sound.
Edit: Great, Now I don't have sound and a super laggy laptop.

Did you install inxi? if so could you post the output of inxi -F

1.) I see you are using the "testing" kernel, did you have a hardware issue that made you install this?
2.) The sound looks like it is set-up correctly with the kernel. Did you try the previous instructions again? if this corrects the problem again then we might just need to tweak something to make it permanent.
3') This may not be relevant, but I noticed from googling for your spec that your cpu does not support hyperthreading or virtualization and it made me think that a 32 bit installation might work better on that system. but like I said it may not be the case it is just a thought (and something I would probably try).

1. I had no idea I was using a testing version. This could explain why I never had problems untill now.
2. Yes that did work. I did it again and It is working fine now. It might go away after a reboot, but its random.
3. Since my laptop is a 64 bit, I thought 64-bit iso would work perferectly. If this helps, virtualization works perfectly for me.

1. If you have no need of the newer kernel it would probably be recommended to use the stable one. But I cannot say if this is the cause for this issue.
2. Let us know if the problem comes back after reboot, maybe disabling this permanently could be a resolution but I would need confirmation from the devs.
3. Yes I would have used 64 bit initially, but sometimes you can get better performance/memory usage from using the 32 bit version, but again I would not think this would be the cause of your sound issue (but you can never tell). If you can spare 10Gb of space on your hdd I would install the 32 bit and multiboot to test which one you feel is better for you.
According to These specs your CPU (SU2700) doesn't support "Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x)". but that is just for information and not necessarily relevant to the issue.

Please, put here an output of the terminal command:

Using kernel 4.7 could be the source of audio system issues, we would recommend to use default Q4OS kernel. We have observed, in some cases, that the package 'rtkit' in combination with testing kernels and pulseaudio breaks audio system and captures system resources. You could try to remove 'rtkit' package:
$ sudo apt-get remove rtkit

Okay, I will try that. Thanks!

Okay, I will try that. Thanks!
Edit: Now will do a reboot....
Edit#2: Now everything workes perfectly! No more issues here! Thank you @q4osteam and @Dai_Trying

What action did you do ? Kernel downgrade or 'rtkit' removal ?

I did "sudo apt-get remove rtkit"

I just wanted to add that I think you might be better to use the stable kernel, I only use the testing kernel if I have a need, for instance my newest machine must have the newer kernel for it to function, but my others (2011 and older) all function correctly with the stable kernel and cause me no issues. Obviously you have the choice and it is yours to make, but I would rather keep rtkit and lose the newer kernel. Just my 2 cents.
Description-en: Realtime Policy and Watchdog Daemon
RealtimeKit is a D-Bus system service that changes the scheduling policy of user processes/threads to SCHED_RR (i.e. realtime scheduling mode) on request. It is intended to be used as a secure mechanism to allow real-time scheduling to be used by normal user processes.
