Hello All,
Been off the forum for awhile, been dealing with personal issues. I have a HP Scanjet 5300C that I'm trying to get working with Q4OS. There's no info on any of HP's websites for Linux, that i could find, let alone Q4OS. Can anyone tell me how to set up a "driver" so this will work. It's in mint condition, and I'd hate to junk it. Any info would be greatly apprecited.

Please, first try to follow this procedure http://www.q4os.org/dqa007.html#printer.3 , and report back. You could try to research HP Scanjet 5300C on Debian Jessie. If you will find a guide to get it work on Debian Jessie, you could safely use it on Q4OS as well.

terminal keeps telling me my user name does not exist. I ended up buying "Vue Scan" and it works perfect...Thanks for your help, Q4OS team....it was worth the try..! : )

You have to substitute 'my_user_name' with a real user name, you can guess it in terminal:
$ getent passwd 1000 | awk -F':' '{ print $1 }'

I have an Epson SX535WD all in one printer/scanner and have not installed any drivers for it but needed to scan a document in and installed ocrfeeder to scan and it just found the scanner without needing to do anything. I haven't tried printing with it as it is out of ink, but I'm pretty sure I will need to install drivers for printing, but not for scanning.

I did enter my user name where you said....3 times,3 different ways....each time, terminal said user does not exist. It really doesn't matter at this point, since I bought a program that works. Thanks again.

Vuescan is streets ahead of any of the native linux offerings. I bought it many years ago and it just works. Just make sure you keep a backup of the serial number file! There are regular updates and they are worth applying as the author is constantly refining the program.

Sounds like a good package to use, but I'm really against purchasing software when there are free alternatives, but I am on occasion called a penny pincher.

Agree absolutely - but you can grow old and dai_trying to get SANE to cooperate with slide scanner addons etc to work on some scanners - even Epson - and quite frankly when you've got a job to do the right tool for the job is the one that works reliably.
My Canon 8800F just gets on with it with Vuescan, but with SANE you have to keep fiddling with config files to even get the slide scanner light to work - and then it just scans the using the document scanner.......

I might dai trying, but I'll never get old

Vuescan is well worth the money spent on it...$40 US ...and like bin said..."it just works"...many of us don't have the time to try to get SANE to work right,it usually drives me INSANE...! : -)

I can't argue with your logic, I guess I often have too much spare time.

You speak about Professional edition? As I see it costs $69,95 and for me it`s very high price! Standard edition does not worth to buy too, because all features available in native Linux apps.

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502 If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.

The features may be there, but whether they work with a particular scanner is another matter altogether.
For flatbed/reflective scanning I agree you can get by provided SANE supports your scanner in the first place - or you're willing to spend time messing. However, not ALL scanners are supported by SANE
I spent about 3 months off and on working on getting slide scanning to work reliably and consistently with SANE and XSANE.
Trust me, if you've got hundreds of old slides to scan and repair the last thing you want is to be constantly having to re-tweak config files that reset themselves for no good reason half way through a session.
Price is always a concern - but for less than the cost of a tank of fuel I reckon it's money well spent.

I think that ultimately the answer is if it works for you use the free option, but if you have more issues than you can tolerate maybe a proprietary solution would be better.
I have to say I do use my scanner for normal flatbed scanning so I have had no issues and do understand that anyone with more complex needs/requirements will need either the time (and plenty of it sometimes) or money (a relatively small sum in this case) to get the results they need.
And to touch on what Rademes said

And I have to agree, as far as software goes this would be $69.99 more than I have paid for software in the last 10 years (approx). But I guess that's cause I'm a "mend and make do" type of person, unlike many who embrace the "everything is disposable" philosophy (I am not saying anyone commenting in this thread is like this, it is just a comparison).

I bought the cheaper version. I tried over and over to get it to work with SANE...to no avail..,! I simply don't have the time to hassle with programs/devices that won't work together. Thanks for all your input, I'm truly grateful..!
