I used skype for linux sometime ago (before I found q4os) but am wary of trying it again because it screwed up the distro to the extent that I had to reinstall the complete OS. I'm assuming the version available for q4os is the old version which hasn't been updated for years.
However there is a new (alpha) version which became available recently.

There are alternatives available of course, but none seem to be as ubiquitous as skype is, at least on windows. And let's face it, we still live in a Windows-centric world.

Skype in Q4OS works very well. I have it on two computers with Logitech C170 cameras, and all works as it should work. I don`t think that you should update Skype to newer version, especially if it is alpha version, just install it from "Q4OS Software centre" and everything will be OK.
If you want extra secure Skype, you can run it through Firejail. It already has profile for Skype.
If you still don`t want to install Skype (I recommend to do it), you can use Skype in your web browser: https://web.skype.com/en/

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502 If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.
