youtube-dl

It looks like the version of youtube-dl in the repository is 2014.08.05
But the latest version at github is 2016.09.27.
Quite a difference, considering how quickly youtube changes things!

How do I go about installing the latest? "youtube-dl -U" does not work since it was installed by synaptic.

There are a number of firefox add-ons that do this, I have used a couple of them before and they add a download link to the page and you can select the quality from a drop down selection, but cannot remember which one it was. I know it's not what you are actually asking about but I just thought I would mention them.

Ok, I got it working. Even "youtube-dl -U" works now.

Looking over this page - http://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html
one of the suggestions for installing it was:

sudo wget https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

I did not purge the installed youtube-dl, just ran the two commands.
