libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

Is this where I post a possible bug

installed 1.6.x (latest) from iso - not full package - the basic option (middle choice)
olzeke51@q4os-desktop:~$ uname -a
Linux q4os-desktop 3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u1 (2016-09-03) i686 GNU/Linux
olzeke51@q4os-desktop:~$

installed several programs with Synaptic and apt-get
the last two were your wine.esh  script   & update manager.  BOTH okay with libc-bin
the log files show that libc-bin triggers were processed okay
BUT the when I did the Synaptic install of ark-trinity I got
hung at the libc-bin processing  -- so I did a Control-C to get out of it

below is the 'details' window data

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

Sometimes it can take a while when processing triggers, especially for libc-bin, my guess would be it was just taking it's time, but I would do a sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and check if there are any warnings first and go from there.

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

@olzeke51
We guess the ark-trinity installation in Synaptic passed well, as the message 'Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.19-18+deb8u4) ...' is the last message of the ark-trinity installation process. If you had 'Details' window opened in Synaptic, this installation message could be a bit confusing for you, nonetheless you can safely close the dialog and finish Synaptic.

Please, see the attached screenshot and confirm our assumption.

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

Hi Dai & Team
I did the sudo apt-get commands per Dai, --> only had to get the q4os-styles-qt4 package.
'
A lot of the packages that I installed [via Synaptic and manually per a q4os FAQ] have done the
libc-bin trigger scenario - all within less than a minute.
I waited for a couple of minutes - I had run into the long time wait on tellico-trinity
Normally you get a
"Finishing installation ...
Installation successfully completed :-)"
OR
the command prompt
"Setting up qpdfview-translations (0.4.12-1) ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.19-18+deb8u4) ...
olzeke51@q4os-desktop:~$ "
'
FWIW -  I installed tellico-trinity before wine.esh (no error)  & ark-trinity and it also has the
libc-bin error -----I waited for over half an hour !!!!  AFAIR
'
tellico seems to work, ark seems to work
so . . .  no biggie!.
Thanks y'all-----Olzeke

All the system messages you have pasted here don't indicate an error. 'ark-trinity' has been installed correctly during all of our testing.

Please, describe this error in more detail for us to analyze:
1. Which package manager does the error occurred in ? Synaptic or command-line apt-get, or other ?
2. How the error manifest itself ? Please describe exactly.
3. What action did you taken to release the package manager from the 'hangy' status ?
4. A screenshot would be appreciated.
Thank you for reporting.

Additionally, you could check current status of APT package manager using the command:
$ sudo apt-get check

Ok, thanks. Synaptic never reports 'Finishing installation ... Installation successfully completed :-)' messages. The message 'Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.19-18+deb8u4) ...' is correctly emited as the last message of the install process. If you are able just press 'Close' button instead of Ctrl+C in Synaptic 'Changes applied' dialog, the install process finishes well without any error.

The good - your APT system is ok, as the command 'sudo apt-get check' passed well.

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

I have taken to using the 'details' option in Synaptic - so I can capture errors.
I do a 'select all' or manually click-scroll  & copy  --- on the details.
I paste them into Kwrite or Kate for future reference.

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

Unfortunately we are not able anyhow reproduce the Synaptic (libc-bin) hang or error. All the messages you have posted here are correct and show no error.

olzeke51 wrote:

...

The message is correct, and properly the last message, no hung, as you can see here http://www.q4os.org/forum/attachment.php?item=115.

olzeke51 wrote:

Please try just to press 'Close' button instead of Ctrl+C the next time.

olzeke51 wrote:

The most helpful would be a screenshot, you can just press 'PrintScreen' key and 'Ctrl+v' in filemanager to paste the image.

Thank you for reporting, you are welcome.

THANKS for the tip on screen capture !!! I thought there had to be an easy way.
'
My apologies - some of my software was loaded through the S/W Center - install app -- here is a screen shot of gparted - it has the "finished statements"
** attached file.
Some of my other installs ie. the    xxxx-trinity programs had to go through Synaptic.

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

That capture is from a software centre install, they will have a finished button like the one shown, synaptic just has a close button when finished or if you do like I do and put a check mark where it says Automatically close after the changes have been successfully applied (see attached file) it will just close the dialog when installation has finished, this could help to prevent any confusion as to whether something has been successfully installed or not. smile

And just as a note, if you name your files screen-shots with a png extension they can be viewed easier in the forum smile

Thanks @Dai for the tip on the png -- Konqueror saved it as a .png so I assuMEd it would upload that way!!! silly ME

I don't use the 'auto close' -- I like to see the messages !! & I can capture/copy them for future reference.
[I go back to the days of CP/M - so I enjoy Linux for the terminal data scrolling past !!]
'
fwiw - I was confusing S/W center install with Synaptic as both being the same - silly ME

Re: libc-bin hangs in ark-trinity

I use the auto close to simplify things for me, if there are any issues and I need to see what the output was I can always look at the logfile (/var/log/apt/term.log) which contains the same (very nearly) as the console output.
Another reason I use the auto close is that I have written an apt-updater for q4os which works the way I want with synaptic set that way smile

A very handy and powerful tool to get screenshots from Q4OS is 'ksnapshot-trinity' package, we can recommend it.
