Trinity v. 14.03 tracking

Hi Q4OS team.

Just puzzled as to why we're still tracking 14.01 in Q4OS when Trinity has been at 14.03 for 6 months now?

....or am I missing something as usual..... :-)

Thanks

Re: Trinity v. 14.03 tracking

We focus on stability for Q4OS to be used on production machines, thus it's a conservative approach. We will probably keep the Q4OS Orion stable to be based on the proven TDE 14.0.1 till the end of live cycle. Nonetheless, we may back-port a few features and security fixes from the recent TDE version.

The next Q4OS-2 Scorpion version will be based on the most recent TDE available, and will be maintained as stable as possible the similar way.

Well,  that is bad. TDE 14.0.1 has some annoying bugs, which were fixed only in 14.0.3. I understand, that you want keep Orion stable, but this is not the reason to stick with buggy desktop interface. So please consider update till TDE 14.0.3 in Orion. It may be two years still left, till Debian 9 will became stable.
Also I am still waiting for solution of this problem.

Re: Trinity v. 14.03 tracking

@Rademes
We prefer a 'Debian' model to keep the core system as immutable as possible. Most of applications, including desktop environments, in the Debian stable are maintained in their original major versions and receive necessary fixes only. It results in a certain and steady system, which users and developers could perfectly rely on.

Nonetheless, unlike pure Debian installation, Q4OS offers a possibility to develop and install end-user applications with their own independent update channels to be kept up to date.

We understand, you would want to get fixes of some annoying TDE bugs. The solution would be backport mostly desired fixes from TDE 14.0.3 to the current system, you could try to make a wish list for us to consider and put it here or mail it to support@q4os.org

Re: Trinity v. 14.03 tracking

Well, there are many bugs were fixed in TDE 14.0.3, (https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Changelog_For_R14.0.3), some of them are important for me from this list:
https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2481
https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2577
https://bugs.trinitydesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2473
https://bugs.pearsoncomputing.net/show_bug.cgi?id=2563
Maybe I missed something... I don`t have time to explore all Trinity bugs, sorry.
Also, in Trinity web page is written, that:
R14.0.3 is the third maintenance release of the R14.0 series, and is built on and improves the previous R14.0.2 version. Maintenance releases are intended to promptly bring bug fixes to users, while preserving overall stability through the avoidance of both new features and major codebase re-factoring.
So I don`t see any single reason to stick with 14.0.1. The desire for stability should not impede progress!
You probably have noticed, that the only thing I have complained in forum was Trinity bugs. These Trinity bugs is the only thing, that makes Q4OS not as good as it could be and should be. So in my opinion, you should pay more attention to them, not just ignore new TDE releases with important bugfixes. Believe me, Trinity is not perfect, there is much to be fixed, so TDE updates are very important to end users.
Finally, why should I report Trinity bugs I have found, if you refuse to update till latest Trinity maintenance releases which contain bugfixes?

Re: Trinity v. 14.03 tracking

Of course, we would like to bring newer TDE version for all users. Despite declarations of the Trinity devs team, we would need to verify the update will not break current production and commercial Q4OS systems. It requires lot of testing, possible fixes and modifications. So, we have to seriously consider to take this job, as the arguments are just real.

If you will report TDE bugs, please mention you are using TDE 14.0.1, the dev team will decide how to deal with the report.
