[SOLVED] Can't get 64bit Live CD to boot

Running a dual boot Win10/Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64 bit.

I was so impressed with Q4OS on my old 32 bit machine that I wanted to try it out on the 64bit. Downloaded 'q4os-live-1.4.11-x64.iso' checked the MD5 then burned it to disk. When I start the computer with the disk in it and press F12, the boot menu comes up but only shows the Windows boot manager, there is no option for a DVD/CD.

This computer will boot Live DVD's for 4 different Mint distros, Lubuntu, Ubuntu & Gparted so I'm guessing I have the UEFI set properly. Q4OS isn't the only Live DVD that it won't boot though, I can't get Zorin 9 or Linux Lite 2.8 to show in the Boot Menu either.

When burning I have the speed set at lowest (it runs between 6x-8x) and have double checked that I am burning the image file and not just copying the data file to disk. In the case of Zorin (It was the first of the lightweight distros I tried) I downloaded the file twice and burned it to 3 different disks using 2 different programs, of course none of them were successful.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

You need to set CD/DVD as the first boot disk in your BIOS settings. In another words, you need to change boot priority in BIOS.

If your settings are correct, your PC will boot from DVD automatically. Also I don`t like UEFI at all, so I completely disabled it in my PC.

CD/DVD is already set as 1st boot and Secure Boot is disabled, is there anything else I could try in the BIOS?

As I said above, 6 other Linux distro Live DVDs do boot up I'm just having problems with Q4OS, Linux Lite and Zorin.

I have now tried it with a Live USB (yes I changed the Boot order) but still it doesn't show in the Boot Menu, so just to see what would happen I tried booting the USB on my old 32bit machine and it did boot. I got the screen to start Q4OS and when I clicked that it went to the splash(?) screen then of course it stopped, as expected, because of the kernal. But it did confirm to me that the files on the Live USB appear to be correct so at least they were burned properly and the problem must lie somewhere in my computers settings.

The only idea is to disable uefi secure boot at all and try to boot Q4OS cd once more again.

Check in your BIOS, does your system has CSM Support (Compatibility Support Module) in the firmware. If it has, enable it. Also If you have Boot Mode Selection option, select UEFI and Legacy. Settings may be named a bit differently depending on your firmware vendor (Award, Phoenix...)
Q4OS is based on Debian Jessie, which has limited support of Native UEFI.
Although Debian Jessie (8.0) does include general UEFI support already, there are still some features that have not yet been implemented.

If you will be able to boot, do NOT install Q4OS Orion, it can make your other installed Linuxes unbootable.
On some UEFI systems with CSM the default boot mode for removable devices can be different from what is actually used when booting from hard disk, so when booting the installer from a USB stick in a different mode from what is used when booting another already installed operating system from the hard disk, the wrong bootloader might be installed and the system might be unbootable after finishing the installation.

If you still can not boot from DVD with Orion, or if your system does not have CSM Support, revert settings made in BIOS, download Q4OS 2.1 Scorpion, Live - 64bit http://www.q4os.org/downloads2.html and try to boot it.
It is currently testing version, but some users confirmed, that it is stable enough for general home usage.

P.S. Be careful while altering BIOS settings. If you have your motherboards manual read it first.

That was the problem! CSM was set to 'Never' I set it to 'Always' and am now testing Q4OS on my 64bit machine.

Still curious as to why some Live DVDs worked with CSM disabled and others didn't ... but that kind of knowledge is way above my pay scale, although with Linux I am learning

Mint, Lubuntu and Ubuntu which you have been able to boot are based on Linux Ubuntu, which has much better UEFI support than Debian Jessie and of course Debian Jessie based Linux distributions.
In my opinion, full Native UEFI support is not so important feature, so I prefer more stable and simple classic BIOS-mode bootloader.
Still I should note, that installing Q4OS Orion in in Legacy (not-UEFI) mode can damage your existing installed Linuxes. If you want to keep them, better try to install Q4OS 2.1 Scorpion in Native UEFI mode with CSM disabled.

1. if the other systems (Windows Vista/7/8, GNU/Linux...) of your computer are installed in UEFI mode, then you must install Ubuntu in UEFI mode too.
2. if the other systems (Windows, GNU/Linux...) of your computer are installed in Legacy (not-UEFI) mode, then you must install Ubuntu in Legacy mode too. Eg if your computer is old (<2010), is 32bits, or was sold with a pre-installed Windows XP.
3. if Ubuntu is the only operating system on your computer, then it does not matter whether you install Ubuntu in UEFI mode or not.
Finally, to have absolute freedom, you must make Q4OS as the only OS on your computer and I suggest you to do so after successful testing. Good luck!
