Firefox updates

Good day!
I have noticed, that using [$ sudo apt-get dist upgrade] my Firefox browser does not update. Probably because Firefox is not included in Debian repositories, since Debian has Iceweasel browser.
How can I update my Firefox browser? I have a very important add-on installed, which only works in Firefox.

Re: Firefox updates

Hi Rademes,  It depends on which method you used to install install Firefox originally. I had issues with Firefox flash always bombing so I, unwillingly, switched to Google Chrome that works okay with Flash (So far).

I remember doing update for Firefox like this

Firefox window, navigate to the Help menu ==> About Firefox. From the About Mozilla Firefox
window, you can see update status and perform update process

(Is this not working now - after you did upgrade ?)

Re: Firefox updates

Hi Bobby! Your update method does not work in Q4OS, and did not work in Linux Mint as far as I can remember. As I said, I need Firefox, because I use very important add-on installed, which only works in Firefox.
Discovered that Google Chrome also uses similar add-on, but there it is much less functional, and what is more important, It is not longer maintained.

Re: Firefox updates

Hi Rademes, have you checked that iceweasel wont work, as it is just firefox with some branding removed (and maybe a few other bits), but basically it is firefox.
Maybe it would help if we knew which add-on you want to use.

There is special update script for Firefox in Q4OS, just run in terminal:
$ sudo ffq4-update

We would recommend you to reinstall Firefox after the Q4OS 1.4.6 will be released, circa in one month, as we are preparing new Q4OS FF edition with complete automatic updates, deeper integration into Q4OS environment and several other improvements.

Re: Firefox updates

Yes, it worked! I think, that this script should be included in FAQ.
Unfortunately, now Firefox uses English language instead of default system language: Russian. Any ideas how to make it use default system language?
Dai, I use Password Maker X. Very good password manager, without any password database, so there is nothing to hack!

The easiest solution now, is to uninstall FF using software centre and install it again, it would detect system language and get updated language pack. The new planned FF edition for Q4OS will include automatic updates including language packs.

Re: Firefox updates

I have nearly the same problem, after some system update Firefox doesn't want to run from start menu either from desktop icon (all other apps do). Although with commandline $ firefox typed -it runs(!!).  I've tried to solve issue with ff help site, tried: apt-get update, apt-get install -f, $ sudo dash /usr/share/apps/q4os_system/bin/qapt_fix.sh ..   None of these affected, and even " $sudo ffq4-update" suggested above seems not being recognized: (sudo: ffq4-update: command not found), any ideas?  I need ff (as a web designer) more than others I know (by the way, even reinstalling ff did not fixed its behavior, I know sounds weird smile

Re: Firefox updates

There were major changes for Firefox since Q4OS 1.4.6 release. There is no 'ffq4-update' tool anymore, as new version of FF will be updated automatically from Q4OS repositories. The best way is to completely remove FF from system and install it again from the Software centre. Run in terminal:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove firefox
$ sudo apt-get autoremove firefox-l10n-*
Go to Software centre and install FF again. This procedure will not affect current FF settings, bookmarks and other user configuration.

Re: Firefox updates

Sorry, it didn't solve the problem of simple firefox launching. But I think, here in mozilla site it says about important software requirements (for Firefox):
GNU/Linux
Software Requirements:
Please note that GNU/Linux distributors may provide packages for your distribution which have different requirements.

Firefox will not run at all without the following libraries or packages:
GTK+ 3.4 or higher
GLib 2.22 or higher
Pango 1.14 or higher
X.Org 1.0 or higher (1.7 or higher is recommended)
libstdc++ 4.3 or higher
For optimal functionality, we recommend the following libraries or packages:
NetworkManager 0.7 or higher
DBus 1.0 or higher
HAL 0.5.8 or higher
GNOME 2.16 or higher

-so next dummy question is how to make sure I have all these installed and not being damaged somehow? (When reinstalling ff either from synaptic or commandline it seems to me like ff totally restores its previous state whatever there may be - it is still stubborn the way it was, and it needs to be removed, then totally cleared out, and then fresh installed after reboot)

Re: Firefox updates

To completely remove FF run:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove firefox
$ sudo apt-get autoremove firefox-l10n-*

Additionally you may want run:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove iceweasel
$ sudo apt-get autoremove iceweasel-l10n-*

Make sure you don't have any external FF/ Iceweasel repositories in '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/'

ellie wrote:

If you want to completely remove user level configuration, remove files:
'/home/user-name/.mozilla'
'/home/user-name/.config/mozilla'
'/home/user-name/.cache/mozilla'
Note it will remove all your settings including bookmarks, etc.

Go to Software centre and install FF again. Installer from Software centre takes care about to satisfy all the needed dependencies and language packs.

What does it mean exactly 'problem of simple firefox launching' ?

Re: Firefox updates

It worked - eventually! I hardly believe my eyes - ff is cured!! Thank you Q4OS folks! (my appologies for English's not my native, by simple launch I meant just starting browser from start menu, the classical windows7 user way)
What I did was: After total uninstalling Firefox I deleted (my experimental act) files related to ff in /home/myname/.local/share/applications (backed them up in different directory, just in case), then
ran: apt-get clean (not sure it it affected though), apt-get update, ReStarted Session, installed Iceweasel first, ran: apt-get install -f, apt-get update, ReStarted, installed Firefox (via Synaptic), again ran: apt-get install -f, apt-get update, and after final Restart (Session) first launched firefox - and it succeeded!

Re: Firefox updates

Glad to see a success, congrats. But this procedure is uselessly complicated. We recommend to easily install FF from the Q4OS software centre as recommended above:

Re: Firefox updates

Need to continue this topic, because after Firefox update using apt-get, the package firefox-l10n-ru was autoremoved, and Firefox became only in English.
Please fix it, because it is very inconvenient every time to remove old Firefox and install new using Software centre. Also I need Russian Firefox.

Re: Firefox updates

We can confirm the issue, when upgrading Firefox from v.44. -> 45. the language pack could be autoremoved. The most easy way to fix it is FF reinstallation from Q4OS Software Centre, it will keep all personal settings and bookmarks.

Re: Firefox updates

I have too a problem upgrading firefox.

I was using firefox 43 with q4os 1.4, in order to upgrade i've deleted firefox 43 (and iceweasel) with apt-get autoremove, but when i choose to install firefox from software center i obtain the message unable to download Mozilla Firefox, check Internet connection, please.

It's the only application that gives me this problem.

For now i've installed iceweasel from repos but i would like to solve the problem.

I don't have the ffq4-update script.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Firefox updates

You could download the esh installer direct from Q4OS main site here http://www.q4os.org/downloads/setup_fir … a1_all.esh that should work, but I can't see why software center is not seeing your network connection unless you removed network manager and have manually configured your connection.

Re: Firefox updates

You don't need ' ffq4-update' script, it is obsolete now. Firefox will be updated automatically from repositories. We recommend you:

1. Remove all previous Firefox and Iceweasel installations:
$ sudo apt-get autoremove firefox*
$ sudo apt-get autoremove iceweasel*

2. Update Q4OS
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

3. Install FF from Q4OS software centre.

I think you might need to follow these instructions from the main Q4OS site http://www.q4os.org/dqa011.html#system.1 to reset your apt database

Re: Firefox updates

Ok, I had a similar issue a while back on a system that hadn't been updated for some time. Try

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I have a feeling something will get updated and allow your installations to work again. Fingers crossed... smile
