Screenshot of login screen

I'm trying to get a screenshot of a login screen without having to run in a virtualbox, the solutions I have found for other distro's don't seem to be working. I think it has something to do with the XAUTHORITY settings (or lack of them at the time).
I can switch to another vt and then in the terminal I can type

chvt 7; sleep 3; DISPLAY=:0 xwd -root > loginscreen.xwd

I get the error message

No protocol specified
xwd:  unable to open display ':0'

If I am already logged in I get the correct screen (my desktop), but when I'm not logged in I cannot grab a display. Any suggestions?
