Seems like I'll be back to Q4OS Testing TDE (+XFCE as primary DE).. there were a couple issues here and there in mint and I managed to fixed them.. but this last issue just completely changed my mind, seems like mint and ubuntu (and hence i think QuarkOS aswell) has removed support for older CPUs.. there's no i915 va driver.. i remember it being available in Q4OS 5 atleast.. so hoping that it's available in 7.0 aswell.
Some of my misconceptions were cleared over this couple days long experience with ubuntu base, and this driver issue being the final push for goodbye.
Now the one and only thing I will miss after returning to Q4OS would be easy terminal updated for ungoogled chromium.. ubuntu base has ppa support which allows xtradeb, and they build ungoogled chromium into a deb and I can peacefully install it..
Well atleast now I know someone who packages ungoogled chromium as deb.. though it's not recommended, yet i do it often, I'm gonna just install the deb manually from ppa.. still easier than using the portable builds
@q4osteam,
1. Could you confirm support for i915 va driver in Q4OS 7.0
2. Could you please compile ungoogled chromium and provide an experimental repo
Oh yeah also seems like my timeshift partition corruption often wasn't a hardware issue, I've been using it very often on mint and it didn't corrupt the superblock even once.. so it seems like a debian/Q4OS issue
Update: still no mirror for Q4OS downloads, had to use colab again

1) which gma (va-api) card you exactly have? i915.ko handle bunch of intel gpus
2) https://github.com/ungoogled-software/u … d-chromium
And welcome back

22b1 is the last 4 digit of pci id, i know i915 handles the va because I've been using it on previous Q4OS versions. I965 is installed in mint and i can't even play videos in vlc with it
That's the source release for ungoogled chromium, not the binary
Thankyou!

Great to see you back! (attachment)
Q4OS 7 is a testing distribution, so I would not recommend to use it, until it become stable. Especially for old PC.
As for Q4OS 6, the i915 va driver is there, since Q4OS 6 is based on Debian Trixie.
https://packages.debian.org/trixie/va-driver
https://packages.debian.org/trixie/i965-va-driver
But, there is a possible regression in Trixie with i915 drivers.

I personally don't prefer appimages, and I had been using portable Linux since now.. which requires some configuration on every update+it has to be completely manual. The debian/ubuntu builds haven't been updated since v100

Seems crazy enough but the va driver works perfectly in the live version of Q4OS testing. I'll continue with Installing 6.1 TDE

Q4OS 7.0 has been stable for me, both Plasma and TDE releases. And the i915 driver is there.
Calm down, it's only ones and zeroes

Good to hear. Well, Many old drivers are there and works out of the box. But if there is a problem we need to know which card you have, just in case.

Yes, I tried 7.0 TDE and i915 va driver worked for me perfectly. But the debian forky is missing some of the xfce packages i use.. so i downgraded to 6.1

XFCE on Q4OS does work better, compared to mint.. though there are some really bothersome issues like
https://gitlab.com/vala-panel-project/v … issues/399
And the fact that I can't theme kde connect and other qt6 apps properly..
resource consumption is like the same, ~600mb on boot.. but for some reason it starts using zram quite early.. even though I have set the swappiness to 10

@theasmitkid
If you have any problems with XFCE on Q4OS, we can look at them. Just create new topics for issues one by one in the support section, the most important as first.

So, the new plasma 6.6 looks perfect, I can see myself moving to plasma right away.. but i don't think it's coming to this version of Q4OS?
Also would my machine be able to run latest plasma at all, considering the ram and cpu limitations and the increase in system requirements. As for browser i would try using falkon, since it's a part of kde anyways.
I doubt i'd move to anything other than Q4OS, only plausible solution seems to be Q4OS testing, but once again would my machine even be able to handle it + testing doesn't even have plasma 6.6 yet

Yes, your machine should work with Plasma 6. You can try Q4OS-7 testing https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/files/testing/ based on Debian 14 Forky.

Its pretty slow, heavy and plasmashell crashes pretty often.. I'll stick with xfce with Q4OS 7 Testing
