Newbie questions

Hi

I'm an old Windows user and a Q4OS newbie and also a novice in a Linux OS.

A few questions please:
Is it possible to have a show desktop icon in the Quick Launch toolbar?

How do I delete a folder with a program short-cut in Start > Programs? I've tried the TDE Menu Editor and select the Folder and select Delete and Save.
But when I open the Start Start > Programs the Folder is still there.

How do I add a new short-cut to the Start > Programs?

I've accidentally got the Start Button to disappear. How can I get it back?

I've changed file association for html to use Firefox, but html files still opens in Konqueror.

Thanks for any help.

Best Regards

Perra

Re: Newbie questions

Hello Perras and welcome to Q4OS support forum!
First, please read this: http://www.q4os.org/dqa007.html and this: http://www.q4os.org/dqa011.html

How do I delete a folder with a program short-cut in Start > Programs?

Default Trinity 'kmenuedit' tool is not compatible with the Q4OS menu structure due to incompatibility with freedesktop standards.
If you want to edit menu using it, you have to set the default TDE menu instead of Q4OS menu.
You can do it by typing in Terminal:

$ cd ~/.config/menus
$ mv tde-applications.menu tde-applications.menu.backup
$ mv q4-tde-applications.menu q4-tde-applications.menu.backup

How do I add a new short-cut to the Start > Programs?

After setting default TDE menu, you can add short-cuts using TDE Menu Editor. Just add New Element in Programs menu.

I've accidentally got the Start Button to disappear. How can I get it back?

Right Mouse Button on panel -> Add applet on panel -> TDE Menu -> Add on panel

I've changed file association for html to use Firefox, but html files still opens in Konqueror.

You have to change file association settings in Konqueror settings like shown in screenshots:

I am sorry, if you can not understand Russian, but I can not explain another way...
Still hope I helped you.

Re: Newbie questions

@Rademes
Thank you for the highly relevant explanation. We would add some additional information.

Perras wrote:

The button is already present in the default Q4OS desktop layout.

Perras wrote:

See Rademes answer above and this http://www.q4os.org/dqa011.html#desktop.2

Perras wrote:

See http://www.q4os.org/dqa011.html#desktop.4, it will bring back the default desktop layout.

Re: Newbie questions

Hi

Thanks for the friendly welcome and for excellent help!

Much appreciated! :-)

I've fixed everything to my liking now except for the "Show destop" shortcut.
In fact I don't have any "Quick Launch bar" either. Perhaps I've accidently removed it?
How can I activate it and the "Show desktop" shortcut?

When switching to the Trinity Start Menu the shortcuts handles slightly different.
Now there is a sub menu called "Lost and Found" with misc shortcuts including a bunch of Uninstall shortcuts.
Is that correct?

Best regards

Perra

Right Mouse Button on panel -> Add applet on panel -> Quick Launch (orange rocket) -> Add on panel
On quick launch bar will be "Show desktop" shortcut.

Yes, all shortcuts, which does not fit in other menu categories are shown in "Lost and Found" menu. Everything is OK.
Uninstall shortcuts can be used to remove applications, which were installed using Q4OS Software Centre.

Re: Newbie questions

Thank you very much for your help Rademes!

A few more questions please:

I have a strange problem with some files in my Document folder, they are a few html files and when I try to move them using Konqueror to a usb stick I get this message:
Could not write to /media/.......
I've also tried to move the files using Krusader with the same result.
I can move the files to other folders on my HD and I can move other files to the usb without problems.
Any ideas why this happens and how to fix it?

The sorting in Konqueror is not the same as in Windows.
For example a file or a folder with a name starting with an underscore is sorted before normal letters in Windows, but not in Konqueror.
Is there some setting to change to similar sorting as in Windows?

Is it possible to change how open programs are displayed on the panel?
If I have several instances of the same program they are stacked and are displayed for example as Firefox[2].
Is it possible to have all instances side by side instead?

Is it possible to change the mouse cursor behaviour?
The normal mouse cursor is an arrow but in some situations it becomes a pointing hand.
Is it possible to change the pointing hand to the normal arrow instead?

In Kwrite and Kate text editors there is a small symbol displayed when there is a space, is that possible to turn off?
In Kate the Documents Browser is open by default when starting Kate. Is there a setting to start with the Documents Browser closed instead?

Best regards

Perra

Re: Newbie questions

1. As I understood, some files can be written on USB Flash drive, but some can not. I have never had such problem. Check file permissions on files, which cannot be copied. You have to have read and write permissions on them. If you don`t have type in terminal sudo chmod 666 /path/to/file/file.html to make them readable and writable for all users.

2.  I can not help you, because I can not reproduce your problem with sorting.
s_1458652638_1184993_7d21006775.png

3. Try to change TDE Panel Settings like this:
s_1458653137_5656882_3d7eb32cf1.png

4. Uncheck this in Mouse Settings:
s_1458653630_5269145_8ba9d67179.png
If it will not help, then you have to download and install new mouse cursor theme, because all preinstalled cursor themes have this hand. I don`t know how to do it.

5. I don`t use Kate, so I can not help you with it, sorry. I use only KWrite.

Re: Newbie questions

1. The permissions for the files that I can't move or copy to a USB flash drive is displayed in Konqueror as: -rw-r--r--

2. The sorting is as you show it when created in Q4OS, but on my USB flash drive the sorting is as mentioned above.
Could it be because the files and folders where created in Windows OS?

3. The suggested TDE Panel Setting worked fine!

4. I've already that setting, but it's ok.

5. Yes it was that symbol I meant. The suggestion by Dai_trying fixed it. It was a similar setting in KWrite also.

Thanks again!

I am not sure, but maybe it is because Konqueror is interpreting symbols, created by Windows Explorer differently.

Re: Newbie questions

I have had some issues when opening a file in Kate (via konqurer window) where Kate did not see files that had been copied to a folder. It appears to be a TDE bug (if I remember correctly per Q4OS Team).

I now only use Kwrite editor only and have had no issues at all.

Re: Newbie questions

@Dai,  your right. I did not make it clear and have updated to include, "When opening files in Kate (konqueror) - had issue"

Thanks,

Bobby

Re: Newbie questions

I thought I remembered something about it, but then thought I must have been mistaken and it was a kate issue... oh well I guess that's what happens as the grey cells start deteriorating smile
