Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

This was originally posted here, but probably the wrong place. https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.ph … 697#p30697, so hopefully i am not breaking any forum rules. I can install no problem, but after i install the desktop version it does the final reboot and i get stuck at "Finished system-update-utmp-runlevel.service - Record Runlevel Change in UTMP." I saw someone else had the same issue last year, but he never replied to the suggestions. I tried a variation of them with no success. Let me know if i should proceed but i dont want to experiment too much as if i start using it and it doesnt reboot after an update, then there is no point. I am really happy with the install on my other laptop but this one is much more powerful and has a nvidia card so i was very hopeful.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

HI, i was not sure what you needed. I will post the screenshot of where the computer gets stuck as well as the bios. Please note that everything is installed, it is the last reboot, where this occures and the computer is stuck so i cannot provide anything else. I have tried selecting full desktop with KDE Plasma, as well as with Trinity, no difference. i am not sure if should try and install the nvidia drivers in the software store or what to do. Actually, how do you attach anything...to this..

Here are some details
bios version 306
Intel i7-9750H CPU
16384 MB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti
NVMe SSD (512GB)

As mentioned, i can boot to the USB and install with ease. I even get the congrats message. But when i install the full deskop, and it tells me to reboot, it will not reboot and i get stuck at that prompt with no way of going forward. I will try to install only trinity 64bit to see what happens.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

Well, please try to install Trinity 64bit from the "install cd", not from live media, and post the result back. If it boots properly, you can add Plasma desktop using desktop profiler.

You can download the "install cd" from our downloads site https://www.q4os.org/downloads1.html

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

HI, thats what i did, and it installed. I cannot say i like vs plasma so i have a question. I was going to install Nvidia drivers, so two quick questions. I am getting this message, secure boot enabled, i need to turn it off. Or sign Nvidia kernal modules with a proper signing key...how would i go about this. I would imagine i would need to get rid of secure boot. However, should, i go and install KDE plasma and then attempt it., please advise.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

If you want to install Nvidia drivers, just turn secure boot off. With secure boot on, Nvidia kernel modules will not load as they are not signed. It doesn't depend on desktop environment anyhow.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

As mentioned fastboot is enabled, not secureboot. Again stuck. I reinstalled again, but not with the no options selection, i did the manual install. The software must have somehow, wrongly, that secure boot was enabled in the bios. If it does it again, i think that will be it for me, unless i can get a simple resolution. I like your software, but i dont want it to stop working in six months from now, and the NVIDIA or something seems to be causing it too many issues. i have noticed there have been other posts about this from a few years ago, regarding fast boot and getting stuck after installation but it does not seem to be solved. Too bad, i will hope this last try will work, as i will need to move on otherwise. Now i installed again, and the mouse doesnt work...wow. I dont know else to say.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

You can open konsole terminal and type this command:
journalctl -p err -b

Copy and paste it here to see the system errors.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

Outside of the 1660 TI Nvidia gpu, your system is pretty tame with a 9th gen intel cpu and really shouldnt be having any issues with Q4OS.
Why is your bios not saving your selections such as secure boot and fast boot off?
Q4OS uses the Nouveau drivers by default for Nvidia gpus, so installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers should work fine.

I own a number of 8th/9th gen laptops and havent had issues with Q4OS at all. Ive never had any issues with fast boot.

With your system theres no reason you cant use KDE but fast boot and secure boot must be off in bios and save those settings.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

i did install again, this time with no auto trinity install, and i was able to get it to work, even when i upgraded to KDE...which is great. The last hurdle is the NVDIA drivers, which will not let me install because of the non-existent secure boot, or i need to sign the drivers...anyways, i tried free ai, ask Leo on brave, for some help, and it just put me in circles. I may do a separate post tomorrow as i am pretty sure others may have the same issue, so then there will be a solution going forward. But the key to this part was manually installing trinity (automated did the same thing) and then adding in kde afterwards.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

The Nouveau(open source designed Nvidia drivers) drivers are fine unless youre going to be doing high end gaming. You dont really need the Nvidia proprietary drivers, if youre system is presently working with no issues.

In your bios there should be a setting to disable secure boot, unless Asus did something. Ive never run across that with Asus products as they always allow you to turn off secure boot. Glad you were able to get KDE working but again if the system is booting fine, I wouldnt bother with the Nvidia proprietary drivers.

I looked at your systems bios settings online.  Using F2/F7 to enter the bios, go to the security tab and under that tab, look for secure boot control and set it to disabled, then save settings before rebooting.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

I am not sure what to do here, and i am using the built in cpu for the screen etc, and not using nvidia or nouveau at all. I would like to be able to use the gpu and the offshoot now i cannot use an extra screen as nothing happens when i connect, probably because i am using the nvidia drivers. I still get this message "Secure Boot is enabled, so the Nvidia kernel modules must be signed. You need turn secure boot off, or sign the Nvidia kernel modules with a proper signing key before setting up. Please keep the current video drivers now." It is not enabled, so does anyone have experience in signing the Nvidia kernel modules as AI is useless in my experience.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

i was wrong...so rather than posting again, i bit the bulliet and did a complete reinstall. The prompt for the nvidia installation came up but now after it boots the screen is black...obviously the drivers did not work. So what to do next...i was really hoping to use the drivers as i was going to try some local llm's which would work alot better with a GPU. Anyways, luckily i have two pcs and the software works well on my Dell Latitude so any suggestions to resolve this would be most welcome.

We would recommend you just cancel the installer and use system with the default Nouveau driver, or try to install NVidia drivers following the Debian wiki https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers . It will work on Q4OS as based on Debian. Please post back the result.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

i am not sure if my pc is possessed, but when i select the usb from the bios, the computer boots up normally, and it uses the intel graphics card. If i try it again, and pull out the usb, it boots up and then the screen goes blank. I cannot seem to reinstall q4os like i have done with it and 100 other softwares before it. I dont understand why. i have now reloaded the latest q4os on a usb using balena etcher, and now, even though i had only selected usb for the boot options, it only boots from the hard disk and the screen goes black. If anyone has any ideas, i would be appreciative but i am pretty well given up as i have wasted so many hours on this.

The last two lines are as follows:
Starting systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service -Record Runlevel Change in UTMP.....
[  OK ]  Finished systemd-update-utmp-runlevel.service -Record Runlevel Change in UTMP.

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

Although we are not able to reproduce this issue, it seems that it could be a common Linux problem on certain NVidia hardware as Google search suggests. We would first recommend you to try to install "haveged" package and post back the result.

Try to boot in the advanced options > recovery mode and install the package:
# apt install haveged

Re: Installation issues on Asus Rog GL531G

HI, i thought i would follow up. I followed your advice, chose advanced settings and the laptop booted up and has every time since. I didnt do anything else.

However, it operates very poorly vs the dell which died so i am going to buy another laptop that is new or almost new...so another topic awaits.

Thanks for your support.
