DVD issues with Lenovo ThinkStation P520.

I am experiencing some problems with my DVD collection (purchased) and the CD / DVD drive (internal) in my recently acquired Lenovo ThinkStation P520. I haven't had time until recently to try to back up my CD and DVD collections as images. Particularly DVDs have been causing problems. Video cds and cds appear to mount so far...

It is quite a while since I last looked at my collections, but I seem to remember that this used to be possible. Here are some of the things that I have tried so far, to test what is going on:

$ sudo mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/optical
mount: /mnt/optical: no medium found on /dev/sr0.
       dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.
$ dmesg
[ 931.849354] VFS: busy inodes on changed media sr0
[ 1425.617563] sr 3:0:0:0: [sr0] CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.
$ dvdbackup -M
libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd
Cannot open specified device /dev/dvd - check your DVD device
$ vobcopy /dev/sr0
Vobcopy 1.2.1 - GPL Copyright (c) 2001 - 2009 robos@muon.de
[Hint] All lines starting with "libdvdread:" are not from vobcopy but from the libdvdread-library

[Info] Path to dvd: /dev/sr0
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/sr0 with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/sr0 for reading

[Error] Path thingy didn't work '/dev/sr0'
[Error] Try something like -i /cdrom, /dvd  or /mnt/dvd
$ mkdir /mnt/dvd/

$ vobcopy /dvd

[Hint] All lines starting with "libdvdread:" are not from vobcopy but from the libdvdread-library
Segmentation fault
"Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/sr0".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details."

vlc_log.txt:
-- logger module started --
main: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
main: playlist is empty
dvdnav error: Could not open /dev/sr0 with libdvdcss.
dvdnav error: Can't open /dev/sr0 for reading
dvdnav error: vm: failed to open/read the DVD
dvdread error: Could not open /dev/sr0 with libdvdcss.
dvdread error: Can't open /dev/sr0 for reading
dvdread error: DVDRead cannot open source: /dev/sr0

Any ideas?

Re: DVD issues with Lenovo ThinkStation P520.

You could try an external USB DVD drive to see if theres a hardware issue. I use them all the time with success.

Re: DVD issues with Lenovo ThinkStation P520.

Thanks for the answer. It turned out to be a faulty SATA optical drive.

Re: DVD issues with Lenovo ThinkStation P520.

Pretty common with older hardware, so I keep alternatives around just in case.
