Hello guys, this is one of those basic queries that seems to sprout added complexities because of Trinity, so I figured it would be worth posting here.
I'm using a vanilla Aquarius/Trinity 64-bit. I've installed a fair amount of additional software but the basic setup is pretty much as per the original download.
I've had pretty good results with the default file manager but it doesn't have a preconfigured option to list folders with file counts and kbyte counts. Instead, all folders are listed as "128kb". I can get the info by other means but having it in the file manager would be very useful.
Is it possible to persuade the FM to do this? If not, could someone recommend an alternative FM?

Which one? Konqueror or krusader or?
You don't have any screenshoot?
Me use Konqueror which has configuration option, its rich features like a swiss army fm If figured it out.

Sorry for being lazy -- I didn't bother to check because it's the default. It's Konqueror. Where do you access those configuration options?

You can find it at window top bar-setting.
You also can use any fm, but all fm just the same config., just figure it out at the top bar of the window, i'm lazy, but doesn't freeze me to just find and clicking on it.

Sorry for slow replies. I had some time for tech issues today so went into the Konqueror settings. This is such a trivial thing, but it really isn't working. Recap follows:
* I like the Konqueror file manager (mostly) and don't really want to change it
* I want a readout of file sizes in the file manager =>
* I go into Settings/Configure Konqueror from (any window)
* I go to Appearance and check the lowest option, "Display file sizes in bytes", then click "OK" to close the settings
* ...but no file sizes are displayed, even after a restart
I realized while doing this that I'd had the same problem right after installing Aquarius but had put it aside because I didn't need the size readouts at the time. The lack of a readout is now impacting on my work, plus if I sort this one out I may find other useful functions that weren't previously available to me. Any advice?
WM.

You can switch to "Detailed list view" to display files size. Main menu > View > View Mode > Detailed list view

Thanks, but this doesn't do what I want. I'll restate the matter of my original post in more detail.
I need the file manager to show the file size of each folder with all its contents. I'd have *expected* the "Detailed list" setting to do that, but it only lists the sizes of individual files. Folders are all shown as having the same size, 4,096 on my present view. This is presumably the number of bytes of disk space taken up by a directory flag on an ext4 hard disk and it's of absolutely no use to me.
Csan Konqueror be set up to show folder-and-contents sizes? If not, can anyone recommend an alternative?

You have pointed out the reason why what you want cannot be shown. I have not come across any file manager that does that.

With Dolphin on Q4OS 4 / Plasma, some directories (not all) have their size displayed and some sizes are obviously wrong: some are shown has having several exabytes (E is for the "exa" prefix; 1 exabyte = 1'000'000'000 gigabytes), although the size of my SSD is only 500 gigabytes.

Thanks, all. Thought this would be easier.
"I have not come across any file manager that does that."
I really don't want to come across as being full of unreasonable demands, so I'd like to mention that many of my expectations of computing were formed in the late 80s and early 90s, when I was closely involved with the Macintosh. I have no idea whether Apple's current OsX neatly calculates and displays folder sizes but I know that System 7 did.
Best, NP

@hchiper
Curious.
On my plasma system formatted ext4 the size column just shows the number of items in the folder.

There is an option to choose between number of items or directory size (up to 20 levels deep).

It was one of those funny things that happen.
Before Xmas I was given a Macbook Air 7,2.
No use for a redundant OS, but an excellent light machine for showing photos at photography club meetings.
Important feature has to be connecting to a projector and keeping local display useable as well.
PLUS have to be able to run FastStone Image Viewer (windows app) in wine.
Recent changes to the TDE window manager mean it no longer works in TDE - and getting TDE to work dual screen with different res has always been a pain.
The only window manager that can make FS behave properly in full screen mode is XFWM.
I love XFCE but it just feels so clunky on a Macbook.
I have experimented off and on with Plasma but never really got to grips with it but I do know the handling of external monitors is good as I have used it with the projector before and it just works! Still have a little struggle with the WM. If I minimise FastStone it just vanishes...but I know not to do it.
So, it seemed a good time to get to know KDE better - mainly and TBH only - because of the Catalina OS theme which allowed me to set up the MacBook to look like a Mac. That may seem sad, but when your target audience only know windows and macos it's a good idea to not freak then out with what they see on the screen.
The latest iterations of Plasma 5 have been much better behaved than the earlier ones. However I gather Plasma 6 is a lot more memory hungry than 5, and with only 4gb of RAM on the Macbook I either need a new bigger NVME for a swap file, or a different DE.

Very helpful - thank you.
Still getting to grips with the deeper bits of settings, though do worry about some of the figures it produces.
/proc showing 128Tb is a little worrying.
I also noticed it didn't want to display folder sizes on external media at all.
hey ho!

I run a test install of KDE Neon with KDE 6 and I havent noticed a huge difference with memoiry usage. I run with no less than 8gb yet KDE 6 doesnt waste the ram. Early KDE 5 had issues but they did a good job of fixing it pretty quickly. KDE 6 is also having some teething pains but its improving.
