Re: Audio Tape Converter

I have had reason to do this a few times, and just used a cable with 3.5mm audio jack (or whatever connecters you may have) to connect the audio output of tape player to audio input on pc, then just audacity (or any audio recorder) to record track to mp3 or whatever. I prefer audacity as it is simple and effective.

Re: Audio Tape Converter

I plugged in the tape deck, had it playing thru the computer speakers; opened Audacity, nothing in the "Device Toolbar"....what do I need to check/configure..?
I read the "Mixer Toolbar Issues".
You don't have the correct permissions to access the sound device, perhaps because you need to add your user to the "audio" group. How can I check this..?
I'm using Pulse Audio, preferences show "ALSA" audio device... Any suggestions...?

Re: Audio Tape Converter

If you need to be a member of the audio group, just type

sudo usermod -a -G audio yourname

where yourname should be replaced with your login name. You will need to log out / in to activate and then should be good

Re: Audio Tape Converter

If you have logged out/in and it didn't work, try a reboot, and if that doesn't work either

 sudo apt-get --purge remove audacity

and then

sudo apt-get install audacity

then you should be ok as you know you are in the audio group already and installation may clear something up.

btw I just tested recording this way with audacity on q4os and it worked flawlessly.

Re: Audio Tape Converter

I just tried everything you suggested. Still all that's visible in the Device Toolbar, is a speaker,3 tiny arrows, and a Microphone. However, if you click on any of them, nothing happens. No drop downs, or any text what so ever....Everything is "on"....somethings not right....

Re: Audio Tape Converter

Have you got codecs available? if not that could be the cause, you could install the codec pack from the welcome screen or software centre, I usually install them as a matter of course nowadays, everything seems heavily dependant on multimedia.

Re: Audio Tape Converter

Just a thought, The buttons will not do anything until they have something to work with, try loading a file, if that works ok then all you need to do is plug in your tape player hit play and click the record button in audacity (red one).

Re: Audio Tape Converter

I didn't need to, it was auto selected from recording source

You only normally have one or two input devices, and I have noticed jack plug sensors are better these days.

Re: Audio Tape Converter

I have my audio from my laptop going through microphone input and it just works, If you have more than one input source you could try swapping the connectors and try from another input. Other than that I can't really think of anything else, have you checked your audio settings? Is you microphone or line-in muted?
