Sadly, same old, same old...
From the top of my head, here are some rather common text editor features that are sorely missing from most of the list entries without heavy tweaking:
- auto URL activation (applying to 'https://' and 'mailto:' initiated strings);
- ISO date formatting with easy insertion (remember that "YYYY-MM-DD" is a standard, at least for the eurozone);
- easy selection case conversion (UPPER/lower conversion minimum and including diacritics, because not everybody writes in English).
This are the bare minimums expected from a modern plain-text editor in my book.
Should you need examples from the Windows world, just look at Notepad++ or Notepad3 -- both free, BTW.

Unfortunately not much has changed and variations depending on the region of the world and language still exist.

Featherpad has minimal dependencies.
Converts URLS and pasted mailto into links (I don't know if the generated mailto link behaves as expected as I have no experience of using it)
Date format is fully customisable
Keyboard shortcuts for case changing. No idea about diacritics but as it does allow you to choose your dictionary using hunspell dictionaries I guess it might.
Excellent Find and Replace for line endings which is what i use it for a lot.
Lots of other goodies - check it out - it's in the standard Debian repos.

You may want also check text editors from Flatpak source, for example Notepadqq, NotepadNext and others

Thanks, will try.
Last time I did -- granted, sometime ago -- the panorama was bleak: If memory serves, the best I could muster was m(oo)edit (https://mooedit.sourceforge.net/), which has been abandoned for ages...

Youll be surprised at the wider choice of text editors available thru Flatpak in Discover, as Q4OS Team mentioned.
