New to Linux!

I am relatively new to the Linux community. I have installed Q4OS 64bit on an old laptop with a single core processor and one gig of ram. It seems to run ok, but I was wondering if someone could tell me if I should have installed the 32 bit version because the system only has one gig of ram. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks! tersing59

Re: New to Linux!

You didnt mention what hardware you are using which would help. Its possible your laptop can actually use more ram than youre presently using but more than likely its a 64bit system. Please post some info on your hardware, thanks CC

Re: New to Linux!

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 3680. CPU specifications:Intel Celeron M 410 1.46 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, L2 1 MB Intel Celeron M 4201.6 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, L2 1 MB Intel Celeron M 430 or higher 1.73 GHz, FSB 533 MHz, L2 1 MB Chipset:Intel 940GML
Express Front Side Bus:533 MHz FSB  Maximum supported memory: 2GB Memory type: Dual-channel SODIMM DDR2-533

I am going to purchuse more ram and max. the board out at 2GB. I think I can continue to run the 64 bit version that I installed with no problems. Thanks for your response! tersing59

Re: New to Linux!

Youre good to go as the Celeron M is definitely 64 bit but its a shame you cant use more than 2gb of ram. You can definitely continue running Q4OS 64bit.

Re: New to Linux!

Added the 2gb of ram and it runs fine for a spare laptop.

Re: New to Linux!

The issue will be certain software and running some things online, as 2gb can really slow things down. Q4OS no doubt though, makes older hardware run quite a bit better. The least amount of ram I use is 4gb in of my older devices. Increasingly today you need 8gb for most general use cases.

Re: New to Linux!

My daily driver has 32GB of ram. I dual boot with Win 10 and Linux Mint. I will get to the point where I will not use Microsoft products. I hate Win 11 and will not use it! Thanks for all your information! Happy New Year!

Re: New to Linux!

My wife is self employed and works from home quite a bit of the time. It keeps me busy keeping things together for the next few years.
