Hello,
I'm from France but I have a bad English espialy in tecknik informatiks .
KDE is my favorit desktop it's the reason I am looking for a reliable and stable distribution without too many bugs. Currently I am using LMDE6 and I am happy, but I hate the Cinnamon desktop. I would like to know how your distribution works, if updates are frequent (it is a horror for all distributions based on Ubuntu, in addition the kernel 6.8 is a disaster). So I am looking for a distribution with KDE that is simple and refined (I like the dark mode). I would like to know the lifespan of a Q4OSQ version and if it is possible to switch from one version to another like under Linux Mint LMDE. Anything you could tell me about this distribution would be welcome. I would like to know the difference with LMDE, if there is one! and to know if this distribution which seems good to me, has a future ahead of it. There are so many distributions that come into being, but just as many that disappear. Thank you in advance.
Best regards

Q4OS is based on Debian Linux and honors the Debian development model. So if you like the Debian approach, you will love Q4OS. Q4OS uses Plasma desktop environment as the default, it differs from LMDE significantly. Into your question, we see no reason for Q4OS to disappear. The lifespan is set to 5 years from the release date, the upgrades major to major editions are not recommended, as they could in rare cases foul the system with some hidden misconfiguration. what could show at random later. So you will need to manually fix them, The same as Debian. However, if you are sure about such an upgrade, you can do it by Debian instructions with the same reliability, Q4OS utilities are quite simple and survive the upgrades well..

Are updates appearing as a form of information?

LMDE uses Cinnamon desktop by default while Q4OS uses Plasma or Trinity desktop. Yes, updates appear in the system tray notification area.

So true. One of the reason I love Q4OS, is that it is one of the rare (maybe the only ?) debian distribution who's shipped whith trinity de. Although plasma is getting better within the years, Trinity DE is so light on ressources, always responsive even on slow machines, and with all the features you want from a good modern working environment, that I can't use anything else now
If you're the kind of guy that don't want bells & whistles and want the maximum performance for your applications whithout sacrifying cpu cycles & ram for useless visual goodies, Q4OS trinity is for you
(Plasma version of q4os is very good too, don't misunderstand me, just wanted to say why I love trinity DE)

TDE has improved a lot but the overall interface with KDE provides a quick and clean experience, with a huge amount of customization if you need it. KDE also runs lighter than most people think and Im running it on some of my older hardware with no issues. You can turn off all the goodies and lower the resource usage a lot in KDE if you need it.

KDE consumes slightly more than XFCE but still much less than Cinnamon (fork of gnome). Moreover, all environments consume much more than a few years ago and this regardless of the distribution. Just add a few extensions and it climbs quickly
Do you use KDE or Trinity ? I want really a KDE but if if it's possible center all icons , do you mean it's possible ?

Your question is already treated in another thread you created.
It is preferable not to spread the discussions on one topic in different threads.

I run a very clean KDE installation, which doesnt use a lot of resources. In my case it uses about the same or slightly less than XFCE, but much less than Cinnamon/Gnome. The level of customization allows you to tweak to reduce resource usage, yet still get everything you want. Its more about what you want/need and how that will affect resource usage overall.

If I understand you used Q4OS with KDE but without some customizitation ? What kind of addons do you use on your browser ? Because I've read that some one used many ressource :

I turn off a lot of the system processes that typically launch at boot. I don't use any added effects such as Compiz and my choice of apps is pretty conservative.
I don't use much in the way of addons with Firefox nor any added extensions. Its not quite a minimalist install as I run LibreOffice with Firefox and Thunderbird. Anyone that needs more apps and other addons/extensions as well as possibly more specialized programs cant avoid high resource usage. In my case its mostly for personal use and business and I don't have any issues with memory usage nor performance.

Thx for your answer . What kind of addons do you use please on Firefox ? What processes do you disable at startup? I use Floorp since some month

Looking at startup programs in settings, you should go thru it and decide what you think you can turn off. For instance I turn off print manager as I dont need it a lot of the time. Anything you can access that you dont need a lot of the time is a good candidate to stop it from launching at boot. In Firefox the only addon I use is the H264 video codec, thats it. Firefox does pretty well with resource usage and I clear my cache everytime I shut Firefox down. If you do a bit of research and look at whats trying to launch at startup and whats running during normal use, I think youll be able to find a good compromise between your needs and better resource usage.

Not trying to be preachy or anything but uBO makes it really easy to permanently deactivate on individual elements/pages/domains -- that's what those buttons on the drop-down are for...

Even with my 16 core Intel i9 and 32 GB of RAM, I still use TDE over Plasma. Sure, some aspects of it are showing its age, but overall it flies and looks good while doing so. I personally can't stand the way "modern" UIs are flat and bland looking. I'll take gradients and skeuomorphism over flat design any day.
