I have an Acer Chromebook 317, 17” screen, with 8GB RAM, 128GB emcee drive,
CPU Intel Pentium, Silver N6000. I have converted it to Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon. Performs very
well but because it has no fan sometimes gets up to 80c (max 105c). I have been looking for a
lighter Linux OS, but with all the facilities of the Mint.
I have been trying to install q4os-5.3-x64.r1 but have a couple of problems:-
•
The live os refuses to load unless “Local installation support” is activated, is busy for a
minute or so, then runs normally.
•
When I try to install to the drive it is normal for a while then has a fault when it tries to
install Grub. (error: 1).
The only difference in the drive partitions is that the fat32 partition in Mint is 512MiB, & the q4os
is 300MiB. There is no Swap partition, not required with 8GB RAM, & no Hibernation. The Mount
point is the same.
The Flag in Mint is boot, esp. In q4os it is just boot. In Mint the drive is referred to as
dev/mmcblk0, & in q4os as dev/vda. Could this make a difference?
Why does Q4os see the drive as dev/vda which is a SSD or mechanical drive, when Mint os sees the drive as dev/mmcblk0 which is a card type drive? (see pic of gparted in PDF)This version of Q4os came out this year so should be compatible with a new computer.

Thanks I have attached a PDF.
My guess is that it can not find anywhere to install grub because it is looking for a SSD, and NOT a mmcblk0
Any help would be much appreciated.

The issue is hardware dependent, so it's difficult for us to investigate.
A new Q4OS 5.4 has been just released https://q4os.org/blog.html#news231127 , so you can try it now.
You could also use Q4OS install-cd instead of live-cd, download it here https://q4os.org/downloads1.html . Another test would be to install Debian Bookworm live media and use a dedicated script to install Q4OS on top of Debian, see https://q4os.org/dqa017.html
We would appreciate if you post back any results. Thanks for reporting,
