Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

I'm using the Plasma Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing iso.
AMD 3700x cpu
Nividia 1660 super graphics card
MSI B450 Tomahawk Max (MS-7C02)

Seems good ,wifi ok with ALFA AWUS036ACM MediaTek MT7612U usb dongle .

Problem with non-exsistant grub on boot-up but i used boot-repair from another Ubuntu distro i had installed
to fix it so i could get into Q4OS.
It puts Q4OS in it's boot menu ,just means i can't go directly to Q4OS when i start my computer.

Anyway ,only major problem so-far apart from from the grub issue is the Nvidia driver.
I tried to install it from the gui but it throws up an error box saying something like :

"Can't install on Q4OS 5 ,requires 4.9999 or lower."

Very strange ,haven't seen an error like that before.

Thanks for the report, the NVidia installer will get a fix a bit later. We will report here.

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

About the Grub issue. Would you send more debug info for us to be able to investigate please ? We would preferably need to get "reportq4" debug info from the Q4OS installation as described https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

We are not able to reproduce here, grub installs properly and Q4OS 5 boots fine. Would you specify in more detail please https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502

Does anyone else encounter this issue ?

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

Проблема возникает в Oracle VM VirtualBox последняя версия.
После перезагрузки версии базовая и рабочий стол выдают коды и останавливаются.
(The problem occurs in Oracle VM VirtualBox latest version. After the reboot, the base and desktop versions issue codes and stop.)

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

So, if the kernel "6.1.0-6" works, it's not Grub but kernel issue. The new kernel "6.1.0-7" may carry some bug preventing boot in Virtualbox. We will investigate that.

Работает с сообщением об виртуальном диске. В остальных пунктах меню - нет.
(Works with a virtual disk message. In other menu items - no.)

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

Installing Aquarius with the "Desktop" Flavour in calamares, I got today the same issue with the linux-image-6.1.0-7, cause it will be installed automatic and the restart causes a kernel panic. Workaround is, to start with the grub options and select the 6.1.0-6 image. Then I installed synaptic and deinstall the corresponding 6.1.0-7 linux image and headers. Restart and then via synaptic I reinstall the linux-image amd file and the linux image 6.1.0-7 file but and this is important not the corresponding header file. After that the restart with the 6.1.0-7 image will happen without problem. I have made a parallel installation of debian bookworm alpha 2 and there is no header file for the 6.1.0-7 installed, but Aquarius installs this file (could be that there is a reason for). Seems that this header file could be the root cause. So it is not only a problem in a VM.

Kernel "6.1.0-7" is just the current default Debian kernel. As soon as you update Debian Bookworm you get "6.1.0-7" kernel from repositories. Q4OS does Apt upgrade throughout the installation so it gets the new kernel immediately. So we can conclude Debian kernel issue.

Thanks for reporting anyway

The new kernel seems to be incompatible with  Virtualbox, but it can work fine on a real hardware. And likely it does.

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

At the moment, I do not understand, why the apt upgrade triggers the header file in aquarius and in the bookworm upgrade (this happens during the install) triggers this not. But I have not much understanding for what the header files are good for.

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

@hdwolf

The header files are needed to compile drivers and kernel modules that do not already exist on your system.

I am currently running Q4OS5 in Virtualbox 6.1.40 on a Bullseye host.
Linux q4os 6.1.0-7-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.20-1 (2023-03-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux
absolutely fine. This was based on a Live Image install followed by a normal upgrade.

After installation apt list --upgradable shows no sign of installing headers - as they're not there to start with - so something else must depend on their being installed - possibly graphics card related?

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

Now we can confirm a Q4OS-5 installer bug. If you have installed before, with kernel 6.1.0-6, all went good including the upgrade to 6.1.0-7. However the new installations do upgrade and initrd configuration a wrong way. The resulted system doesn't boot for 6.1.0-7 kernel although the kernel itself works. We are working on a fix.

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

A quick workaround is to boot with 6.1.0-6 kernel and run in terminal:
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo update-grub
Reboot. Now the system should boot fine.

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

@bin
Yes, I can confirm, that a Live install causes no problem followed by upgrade. My two (old) test-notebooks have IBM graphics (Dell Latitude E7240 and Asus X200CA).

@q4osteam
Today I have uninstalled the files linux-kbuild-6.1, linux-headers-6.1.0-7-common. These files are not installed by the bookworm alpha2 installer, so there is congruence between my aqauarius install and bookworm regarding linux images. The Uninstallation had no effect, all things go fine. One difference I have yesterday forgot to report is, that bookworm starts with the 6.1.0-3 image and upgrades to 6.1.0-7. Don't know, if this could be relevant for fixing.

Actually ,might be best to ignore my grub issues.

My system has multiple installs and old remnants of deleted distros.

Everything from Linux distros , Win10 and a Puppy LICK install in the boot list .

I need to clean it up before mentioning grub issues on a forum ,sorry about that smile

I did use Grub Customizer to clean it up a bit ,renamed it to Q4OS 5 and adjusted the boot order. ,much better now.

Anyway ,i look forward too seeing the Nvidia issue fixed in the coming weeks.

This is a great OS , the nicest ,lightest KDE distro i've tried recently .

Re: Q4OS 5.0 Aquarius, testing

Excellent news ,thanks !
I'm using this as my daily Linux OS now ,very quick to boot and runs smooth as butter smile

Can i just update my testing-r3 installation via synaptic or would it better to do a fresh install of the r4 iso to have latest bugfixes?

I was thinking 'testing' and 'rolling' are probably two different things.

You should be fine with the regular update.
