Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

@judydudi
We are not able to reproduce the issue so far, snapshot and follow up installation went well in a VM. If possible, provide the "qreport.tar.gz" file of the current live snapshot booted up, as described here https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502

Then run in terminal of the original system:
$ sudo apt --purge autoremove *live-boot* *live-config* *calamares*
Make a new snapshot, boot it, proceed an installation from this snapshot media and report back please.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

@Q4OSteam
i guess you only use legacy bios boot in VM.
Are you using MX snapshot AND MX live usb maker?

Legacy System -> USB -> Legacy System: fine
Legacy System -> USB- > UEFI System: failed
UEFI System - > USB -> UEFI System: failed

Are you able to check with UEFI system too? Thanks in advance!

Not exactly, we didn't use legacy BIOS for the testing VM, see the steps we have taken:
- Q4OS Gemini Plasma installation in Virtualbox - EFI enabled
- MX tools for Q4OS installed
- Subsequently generated snapshot .iso using mx-snapshot tool
- Move the .iso outside the VM
- Reset VM and boot that .iso on the same VM
- Proceed installation using Calamares
- Installation was a success, it setup a bootable, fully functional system.

Yes, we have not used MX usb-maker indeed, as the generated .iso file could be booted directly in Virtualbox. However the issue doesn't look to do anything with MX tools. Calamares couldn't find "live-boot" files in its Apt database. It seems to be some inconsistency in the original system itself, so we would need the "qreport.tar.gz" file for investigation as mentioned before.

Anyway, we will perform the procedure you suggested on a real UEFI hardware and post back asap, however it will take some time.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

Ahh, OK. I did my testing today in Virtualbox too, but with a real USB stick connected, written by MX live usb maker.
seems to be the MX live USB maker.... I will try use the snapshot with rufus.... and do other investigation.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

@judydudi
We are now able to reproduce the issue, it will arise under certain circumstances no matter how the .iso file is written to an usb stick. We are on the right track to fix it, so you can stop investigations and wait for us to fix it.

The issue has been fixed, you only need to update from Q4OS repositories.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

We have made a significant upgrade of MX tools for Q4OS. Almost all of the tools has got an update based on the latest MX modifications and patches. Current users only need to update from Q4OS repositories.

@judydudi
The upgrade may, or may not, solve the issue with encrypted hard drives. We are going to investigate it, however some independent check would be appreciated.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

Thank you for taking care of the integration of the mx tools.
i did a new test with these upgrades.

My live USB stick created with MX snapshot/mx live usb maker does now have a error message (pic1), but continues after click.
USB boot menue looks different now, but ok (pic2)

My test with a normal install (gemini plasma, basic profil) from uefi source via USB on normal uefi pc install works.
my test from my notebook (plasma4.8, uefi with / and /home partion encrypted), desktop profile ends again with luks error. (pic3)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll get it right! Thanks.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

Pic1.jpg - We can confirm the Grub error message on the live media. It's not critical, anyway, it is going to be fixed.
Pic2.jpg - Ok.
Pic3.jpg - Investigations are underway, we will post here about a possible fix.

We believe, we are on the right path to fix this issue, however it will take some time. We will post back a progress info in some of 10 days. Anyway, thanks for the valuable reporting and testing.

The fix is underway, it will take a few more days to release new MX Tools upgrade.

In the meantime, we would suggest to try a possible workaround. As you run the Snapshot tool, click the "Edit exclusion file" button on the second screen, scroll down the file content and add the line:

etc/default/grub

Save the exclusion file and continue creating the snapshot as usual.

We have fixed the issue, along with other updates and fixes. You only need to do upgrade from repositories and reboot your system. The reboot is important for changes to take an effect.

A feedback would be appreciated.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

@q4osteam
My first test worked right away even with encrypted source partitions. (uefi computer -> USB Stick -> Uefi Computer)
I am so excited. Many thanks for your effort.
In the next few days, I'm going to explore the tools in depth. I will let you know what I find out.

Re: MX tools for Debian and Q4OS

@q4osteam it is great fun to move the system so easily and flexibly with the tools.
The only thing I've stumbled across so far is when I check the box  'encryption' on the live usb maker. Then the stick starts and hangs when I enter a password. To be honest, it doesn't seem to work with mx linux either. So no idea if u want to look at that. Many thanks so far for your effort!

We have tested the encryption option and it seems to be working fine. The issue may be hardware dependent, or some procedure variation on your side. Please provide more details for us to be able to reproduce and investigate. You also need to enter a new password twice on the first live USB boot, then it only asks for that password on each subsequent boot.

By the way, MX tools for Q4OS has been updated as of today, current users only need to do an upgrade from Q4OS repositories.
