Q4OS Won't open desktop envrionment

Heyo!

I recently installed Q4OS a few weeks ago and have been loving it, but this morning I booted up my laptop and I was met with a generic black screen saying:

Debian GNU/Linux 11 [computer name] tty1

Then asking me to login. So, I do, but it doesn't seem to do anything but fire up the terminal, leaving me no way to access my desktop.

I've been referring to this support thread where someone experienced a similar issue, except I don't even have an NVIDIA graphics card, so I doubt I would have NVIDIA drivers installed that might throw things off.

I'm super confused here, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! :+}

What desktop environment do you use ? What media did you install Q4OS from ?

I am using TDE and I installed it from a USB flash drive. I'm new to Linux so I don't know the lingo entirely, but I went with the fast install--formatting my hard drive and installing the OS directly onto it. It worked just fine for about two weeks, so I'm not sure what went wrong. Maybe I installed the whole OS incorrectly?

I also have this problem where the desktop environment stopped starting automatically. After logging in can you try the command:

startx

startx manually starts the X display server which will also start TDE. If this doesn't work you should examine /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

THANK YOU! It turns out I made a typo when editing my synaptics config, and rewriting did just the trick! Thank you so much, mystery solved! :+}

Just out of curiosity, what was the typo? I don't understand how a typo in the synaptics config can stop TDE from launching.

So I had this in there:

Section "InputClass"
Idnetifier "touchpad"
. . .

And the log you mentioned specifically said that "Idnetifier" couldn't be recognized, and it was the only listed error. So I just went in there, corrected the typo, ran 'startx' again and it somehow worked. Couldn't tell ya!

I will say that after getting into the desktop, my touchpad stopped working, so I had to restore my 70-synaptics.conf file to default basically to get it working again. Still don't know how to successfully edit the config to enable two finger touch scrolling... but I digress!

Thanks, now I feel like an idiot. When you mentioned synaptic I somehow thought about the "Synaptic package manager" of the "Software Center" and didn't even think about the synaptic touchpad.

Yes, its synaptics, with an s at the end. Synaptic is the package manager. I get that wrong a lot. Strange they are so close in name.

I also have this problem. The desktop does not loading. I have to login and then type startx, and only after that the desktop loads.

Luckily, this problem was solved after installing proprietary Nvidia driver. But I think, that it is not a proper solution!
What if I do not have Nvidia graphics card?

This issue looks to be hardware dependent, we are not able to reproduce that on any of our testing machines. Please provide the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" file, when system doesn't boot to desktop, with Nvidia drivers not installed.
