hi there,
I have recently installed 32 bit q4os on ancient Dell Inspiron 8200 1.8 ghz 512 ram and it works
Now I am trying to conect a printer HP Laserjet 1000 series to it through cups but it won't work
ismyportopen.com says that port 631 is closed on my ip address.
Cups list my printer and I have Port 631 line in my cupsd.conf file but I can't see client.conf file in my /etc/cups directory
Could anyone here please kindly tell me what should be the content of client.conf file and how should be its permissions set?
Or what should I do to make my printer working?
Thanx in advance.

How is the printer connected - physical port or network?
If you open Konqueror and go to http://yourusername@localhost:631/admin you should be asked for a password and be using your username for login.
When you do that what happens? Do you get in to CUPS Administration or is there an error.
If it doesn't want to connect try the following in Konsole one after the other
sudo systemctl enable cups.service
sudo systemctl start cups.service
If it says it's already running then try
sudo systemctl restart cups.service
and try to connect via Cups Admin
You should not need to be editing any conf files, and you do not want port 631 visible to ismyportopen.com as that would mean you would be making it visible to the whole world - bad idea.
From what i can see the LJ1000 needs some sort of addon or firmware but is supposed to be OK with the Foomatic driver which should show in the CUPS driver list.

physical via usb port
usb type 1 (very old)

No, there is no error:
I get in and I can see my printer there.
I would paste a screenshot here if I would know how to do it...

I tried all this even before I wrote in this forum for help. I found all this on google even before writing here for help. I tried all this also today before replying to you but all in vain
I am not able to print test page or self test page from within cups administration
Print job hangs and keeps hanging till eternity Nothing happens
I can send you error_log but is a long txt file Too long to paste it here
The reason why I believe that the problem is in port 631 is the message that I get on the screen when I try to change server settings on cups administration page:
please stand by while server restarts...
An error occurred while loading http://kavi@localhost:631/admin/?OP=redirect:
Could not connect to host localhost (port 631).
Any idea why?

Use to use that printer as well with Q4OS quite awhile ago and it installed fine using the HPLIP package available in Synaptic. There is also a HPLIP-GUI package for HP Tools.

We would recommend to install HP Drivers from the Q4OS Software center.

It will be very usefull if I could paste in the print screen by using ctrl+PrtScr and ctrl+v which I can't do now or I don't know how to do it

followed your instruction
installied HP drivers from q4os software center
restarted the machine
tryied to print something from KWrite
got following error message:
An error occurred while retrieving the printer list:
Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: 176.76.249.88: read failed (15).
Could this possibly be because I have manualy created client.conf in etc/cups directory with content ServerName 176.76.249.88:631 ?

hplip is already included within the q4os distribution but nevertheless I have retained the last version of it yesterday and installed it but unfottunatelly didn't solved my problem
I think the problem is hidden in port 631

1.
After disconecting and reconecting the printer I get the message on the screen: Driver Plug-in Installation is required: HP Device requires propietary plug-in which is missing. Click next to continue plug-in installation
2.
After clicking next a couple of times I get message:
Unable to receive key from keyserver
withouth this it is not possible to authenticate and validate the plug-in prior to installation. Do you still want to install the plug-in?
3.
if I click yes I get the message: Please enter root/superuser password to continue
Here I am not able to change the user to anything else as me (kavi)
Therefore I enter my own password which is not root.
4.
Although I get alert message on the screen Plug-in installation successful I get ERROR message from HP Device Manager - Plug-in Installer <2>
Failed to install Plug-in
Either you have choosen to skip the Plug-in installation (which I have not done)
or entered incorect password
If I disconet and reconect the printer I get back to step 1.
Any idea what I could do?
Thanx in advance.

Yes
OK, I have replaced 176.76.249.88 with 127.0.0.1 and I get no more error message from KWrite
But although no more error message from Kwrite still no print out
And I still get error message from cups administration when trying to change server settings on http://kavi@localhost:631/admin :
An error occurred while loading http://kavi@localhost:631/admin/?OP=redirect:
Could not connect to host localhost (port 631).

You need to install the HP plug-in.

You may need to repeat the step again, as the HP key-server seems to be temporarily unavailable.

if I get the key from the HP key-server I won't get the message: Please enter root/superuser password to continue ?
Isn't just easier to tell me what is the root password?

The root password is disabled in Q4OS by default. If you want set it up, run the command in terminal:
$ sudo passwd

Alternatively you can add your user to the lpadmin group
sudo usermod -a -G lpadmin yourusername

I managed to make the printer work by following the instructions on https://www.q4os.org/dqa007.html#printer.1
Although, after completing the steps given there:
$ sudo apt install hplip hplip-gui avahi-utils cups
$ sudo apt install libcupsimage2-dev libdbus-1-dev libssl-dev libusb-1.0.0-dev python-dev
$ sudo hp-setup
I had to run additional line which is not provided on https://www.q4os.org/dqa007.html#printer.1 and this is
$ hp-plugin
The only thing that I am annoyed with is that I have to unplug and re-plug the printer and run $ sudo hp-plugin whenever I want to wake up the printer from stand-by
Is there any way to get rid of this annoyance?
