Hi! I have been searching for a new OS since my current OS is now inactive. I put Sparkylinux on an old Toshiba Duo Core 32 bit with 4 GB Ram. I installed xcompmngr so I could have a transparent bar. I tested it on HTOP - a little over 300 mb ram used.
I ran Q4os on a live CD on the same machine. I tested it on HTOP - 730 mb ram used. This shocked me; I know Q4os is a low resource distro. I would love to install Q4os on my 32 bit, 2 gb ram, single core desktop (my main computer), but with ram usage so high, I am a concerned. Any explanation for the difference and why it tested so high?

What version did you try? The one with TDE (Trinity Desktop Environment) or the with KDE plasma? What Q4OS version? Centaurus 3.12? TDE will use less resources than KDE. Also, you said
I put Sparkylinux on an old Toshiba
did you mean you installed Sparky? Or was it a running Live USB too? Any OS runnig in a live USB consumes more resorces than one which is already installed. I use Q4OS with KDE and memory usage is around 350-400mb in idle; no programs running.

Thank you... that may answer my question. I tried scorpion. Sparky was installed on the hard drive; Q4os was live; operating of a CD. I was using TDE; I like the idea of "Trinity" since I am an ordained minister... lol .. Your reading of 350 to 500 mb ram makes it A LOT closer to Sparky, which was 308 mb on my system. Than you, Tolkem!

Sorry Tokem, you said 350-400 mb. The Sparky version I installed used LXQT, not KDE. Thanks for the help again!

You mean a "Live CD" like in "Compact Disc"? Well, that explains that high RAM usage; a Live USB uses more RAM that if running the same system installed from the HDD, but a Live CD will definitely use way more resources since both: CD player and CD disc's read/write speed is more much slower than that of a USB. I'd try from a USB if I were you to get a better feeling, unless that's not possible which might be your case.

Hello. Run Q4OS 3.12, TDE and KDE. Cold boot Trinity 420MB of RAM, KDE 390MB of RAM.

Ok... I tried putting things on the same playing field. I found my old Sparkylinux disk and compared it to Q4os disk (both on CD, not flash drive) Q4os on disk was about the same I reported before, but Sparkylinux, when you add the ram usage (in the low 200 mb) and the cache, is about 100 mb higher than Q4os (around 820 mb). Rough comparison, to be sure, but I am satisfied... thanks.

I meant SWAP, not cache... sorry about that
