I really don't know too much about audio issues but I found that device (ESS ES1988 Allegro-1) is supported by "open sound system" (oss) and searched apt for possibilities and found the package oss-compat, which might help (Don't sue me if I'm wrong, it was a link from the first hit on DDG search for "linux ESS ES1988 Allegro-1")
