Query - can pc be seen as 64bit by one OS, but only 32 bit by another?

'Query - can a pc be seen as 64bit by one OS, but only 32 bit by another operating system? "

My example: Installing 64bit apps under Windows 10
Problem: Sloww.
Solution: Switch to Linux. Better. Faster. Yay.
New problem: 64bit now interpreted by Linux as i686 in Linux, which seems to mean i386 i.e. 32 bit for some/many apps?
New new problem: support lapsing for 32 bit, rejected as unsafe?

New solution ... find Linux that recognises bits same way Windows does. Not sure.

Confused permanoob

If you installed the 32 bit version of any linux distro it will install 32 bit applications, I am only guessing that you might have installed the 32bit version but it does look likely, can you install inxi and post the output of inxi -F which will tell us exactly what you have installed.

Yes, you have indeed installed the 32 bit os onto your laptop, the easiest solution is to re-install using the 64bit image (which you will need to dl) which should give you what you want.

Wow okay weird - coulda sworn I downloaded the 64bit. Or maybe I got confused with an install I did for a mate who was still on XP on his old machine. That also maybe explains problems I'm getting, such as with GNU binary utilities (private shared library) upgrades wanting to wipe out my desktop. Thanks Dai, will re-download and re-install.
