Hello
How can I find out which desktop I have? Trinity of Plasma. I would like Trinity, but I have a lot of Plasma installed.
And where can I find a good description of the differences?
One of the main reasons for me to change Kubuntu is the decision of KDE to drop the feature each work frame can have different background. Hence i just tried to do it with my installation and the result is, there is no change to the present situation, still the same background on all 4 workframes.

Hello!
About the differences. There are a lot of differences between Trinity and KDE Plasma, because Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) is a fork of K Desktop Environment 3.5 (KDE 3.5), but KDE Plasma 5 is the successor of KDE Plasma 4 and was first released on 15 July 2014.
Trinity is classic and as some people say old fashioned desktop environment, with primary goal to be able to run on very old computers and consume as little as possible system resources, while still offering full featured desktop environment. Trinity is suitable for people, who worked and liked Windovs XP desktop interface and who does not want to waste much time for reeducation in order to use new desktop environment. Also for those, who like classic approach without all those modern bells and wistles like widgets and so on. I am one of them.
KDE Plasma is opposite - modern looking desktop environment with a lot of new options and features. Also it consumes much more system resources than Trinity.
Those desktop environments are very different! I don't know, is it even worth to compare them. It is like to compare Chevrolet Impala Coupe and Ferrari Enzo.

Also, what do you mean as workframe? Do you mean first desktop, second desktop, third desktop and switching between them?

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502 If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.

KDE5 has really improved its resource usage and Im using the Q4OS version and at GUI Im using around 447mb after initial boot. Thats a pretty reasonable number given most systems have 4-8gb of ram these days. Certainly you could optimize it further by your settings and turning off unneeded services.
I think he means switching between alternate desktops.

Hello
Thanks for your responses. Rademes has got to the point. My hardware is modern enough and is well equipped. I do not want to have to change my system every 4 years for getting more or less the same, just differently packaged. And worse, great feature are replaced with lesser quality. I cite one of the worst: killing off the feature to have a different background per virtual Background. The arrogance of the developpers when over 200 users have asked to reinstate is also a great reason to change.
So, what are you suggesting to download and install? I have installed at present Q4OS, but I don't see how to install the Trinity desktop.
Funny comparison, I take it you consider the Ferrari for Trinity.
And yes, crosscourt, I do mean switching between desktops.

No, Ferrari is for KDE Plasma 5 - modern desktop with modern software and options.

I would suggest Q4OS Centaurus, Plasma, live - 64bit / x64. Here are the reasons:
You said, that you have modern hardware which I think would be able to run KDE Plasma 5 well.
crosscourt said, that KDE5 has improved it's resource usage. The main reason, I have stopped using KDE was it's huge resource consumption. KDE4 comsumed more than 1GB of RAM after boot.
The main reason is - KDE Plasma 5 is much better supported than Trinity. Trinity users have to wait for bug fix 5-12 months. It is very long period. Native Trinity applications like gwenview-trinity, kooka-trinity, k3b-trinity work well, but, unfortunatelly, they have bugs too. And, if you catch Trinity bug, you will have to wait for a long time, until it will be fixed. Currently, I use Trinity and I will use it until the end of Q4OS Scorpion support. But if the situation will not change, I will switch to another desktop environment completely. The hope dies last.

Older hardware, use Q4OS across many platforms or just like the look and feel use Trinity.
KDE for modern hardware and agree that overall, better supported and fixes come much quicker as well as newer features.

These two 'fastlook' videos should also be of help making a decision.
- Q4OS KDE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNllfkeS6xY
- Q4OS TDE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMD03UQtkeo
For what it's worth, Q4OS KDE Plasma comes with TDE installed alongside it. You can simply switch between the two different desktop environments at the log-in stage. I'm guessing the only sacrifice is loss of little hard drive space - although someone might want to correct me on that if I'm wrong.
