I have to go with edilaq.
I have a dual boot with window 8 and scorpion. Can I just do a distribution upgrade or will I have to install Centaurus over Scorpion?

Only have Srocpion, i will upgrade to Centaurus

Upgrades can be hit and miss on many Linux distro's, I always do a fresh installation and then I know I have a clean working system.
The logic behind this decision for me is that I do not want to risk having to sort out issues that may arise from any changes that have not been accounted for with upgrading.
It only takes around 30 minutes for me to install Q4OS and add my preferred applications whereas it might take that long to sort out one "glitch" with an upgrade, I consider the time I spend on trivial things as wasted and want to waste as little as possible.

Ok, no problem now! By coincidence the hard drive on my desktop just crashed with a dell error 3. Hard drive dead. So, I gotta get a new one and re-install anyway! LOL
By luck the drive works sufficiently that I can boot from a live cd and get data files I need. So, no big problem, just a minor irritation!

I feel your pain, happened to me a while back and like you I managed to recover most of the data although I could have restored from my backup so not the biggest problem for me.

Hello everybody

What happens is that my team uses it for my work and I have several critical applications such as databases and development environments, and for me it is less cumbersome to update and adjust the system than to reinstall all the software.

In your case I would recommend to stay with Scorpion, or dual boot until you can be sure you have everything setup correctly.

Put it this way, how critical would it be to this system if the upgrade failed in some way that left you with an unusable system?

When I go to downloads for TDE x64 "q4os.org/dnt12.html"
I am presented with a file
q4os-3.8-x64-instcd.r2.iso

Is it TDE or KDE ?

It's 64bit TDE installation media. Please check the downloads site for all download options https://www.q4os.org/downloads1.html
