Hallelujah ! Perfect Persistence !

I've been trying this over the years with varying
distros and attendant varying degrees of result.
With Q4OS seems to be working very well.
Using an Q4OS install USB (from downloaded image)
Simply installed Q4OS onto another USB stick.
Presto ..... Live stick with persistence

Just be aware that doing it this way will likely shorten the life of the usb stick, although they are getting better in quality they still have a limited read/write life. Apart from that, nice work.

Hmmm ......... Forgot about that.
Seems to be 'running' mostly in ram?
(based on how snappy)

It should be pretty "snappy" if you are using a USB2 or USB3 port (and supported device) as the read/write speeds are considerably quicker than the legacy USB1 spec, and hopefully it will last you well, can you give us an update in a few months to see how it has coped, I'm sure there are others who would be just as interested as I am to see how it runs long term.

Possible awkwardness #1:

Backed up OS by dd /dev/sda  to /dev/sdb
Backup boots but runs way slower
BUT
Different brand/model USB stick
???
Recommendations for fast, robust, 8 or 16 or ?, sticks ?

I've always found SanDisk and Kingston to be good, but I think one of the main considerations now would be USB3 or at least USB2 compatibility as they usually offer higher data transfer speeds.

My x86 machine is type 2.
Just ordered 4 ea. San Disk 16 G type 2 so experiments will be more meaningful.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway.  If you're using this on your own machine, why not get a small SSD (60gb) and external enclosure instead? That way you'll get more capacity and a longer life span for the device.

Good question !
For the challenge I guess.
I have a SSD that I removed from the machine
This is definitely a case of tinkering with the PC
rather than getting anything very meaningful done.
Anyways several distros claim to "run from RAM",
but seem too slow to be. So far Q4OS is going
good (I wish I knew why) .... ?

This Kingston Digital 32GB DataTraveler Elite G2 USB Flash drive is very good! Fast, reliable and not expensive. I have got three of them. Two 64GB and one 128GB. All of them work very well for now.
Also keep in mind, that 64GB and 128GB flash drives have faster read/write speeds than 32GB flash drives.
