W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

Proposed a mate to try out Q4OS on his Dell, installed Orion (still got that usb-stick), it updated to 1.8.10 smoothely, and i installed the ,basic' package.
Everything works fine except the connection with WLAN: the pc has a (standard) Intel WiFi-Link, tried to connect to a standard german telecom router (nothing sophisticated) and that works without any glitch in Windows.
Here however, the TDENetworkManager quits with error "SSID not found". (strange info, btw.)

I found that old thread here  http://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1732  but without a real solution.

Tried out this here as well: https://bugs.debian.org/842422  (added lines to /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf) but that ,voodoo' didn't help as well.

Is there any way to find out what's in fact the problem is here, error logs available?

Thank you!

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

As I just posted in another topic it is so close to Centaurus being released as the stable version I would suggest you try that out, it may be that the machine needs newer drivers and/or firmware than is available in Orion.
For Centaurus images http://q4os.org/downloads2.html

Hello & Thanks Dai!

Well, the hw is about 9 years old (originally it came with Vista!), and the  Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100  as well... So, i'd prefere to find a solution within Orion wink
Btw: will Centaur come as 64Bit version merely?

I would still use at least Scorpion which should run well on old hardware, but that's a personal pref...

I'm sure I read somewhere that there will be 32 bit support for Centaurus as and when it is released as Stable, but if my memory has failed me I'm sure the dev's will let us know. smile

R.e. your original problem with WiFi:
Did you actually perform an install or is this just from a Live session? Also can I assume this is a 32bit system? (and 32 bit Q4OS image?)

Yes, the 32bit Q4OS Centurus edition will be available as well.

It's an installation. Did a short ,Life'-demonstration, and then the install (desktop setup via lan) and later we discovered the malfunction in WLan. Any possipility to connect without TDENetworkManager or look at stderr-logfiles to figure out what's (not) going on here?

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

One thing to check would be what I had to do in this post if that doesn't help I would check the syslog (/var/log/syslog) to see if it contains any errors or information about network problems, something like

sudo grep -i 'error\|fail' /var/log/syslog

This will list any line that contains error or fail (the -i option ignores case to also pick up Error, ERROR, Fail and FAIL), hopefully this will show at least something.

And I'm sure I remember somebody being told to set up the network using nmtui which runs in terminal although I have not had the need to use this so far and cannot say exactly what you need to do. I would imagine it is quite simple but if you get stuck post back and I will boot a WiFi machine up to test.

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

My Acer Aspire laptop reports that its wifi is an Intel Wifi Link 5100

It connects wifi on Q4OS Scorpion and Centaurus out of the box.

As far as I can tell the Dell 4300 will work with a 64 bit linux.

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

I think the problem is that OP is using an Orion install image, I too have had no problems with wifi other than the scan-rand-mac-address issue.

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

Many thanks bin & Dai for your projections and ideas!
I can test them out later this week, in addition i'll prepare a Scorpion 64Bit install-stick to replace the 32bit Orion (an operation that i never passed before). I'll be back at weekend with an update.
So long...

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

Just a final thought on this. I have just tried Orion 64 bit live image on my Acer and the wifi connected no problem.

I used the old deprecated live cd at https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … o/download

May be worth a try as, unless you know it is there, you wind up getting the Install CD which didn't always behave properly as I recall.

Having said that, if possible I'd go for Centaurus 64 bit as the current Debian 9 won't be around for ever (Scorpion)

Problem reSOLVED!

and indeed quite simple: changed 'security' via nmtui to <WPA & WPA2 personel>  for the the WiFi Connection, added the the passwd and saved it.
That's all. No Scorpion needed, nor 64bit. Great! Apparently just a small glitch in TDE-NM of Orion.
Many thanks for your support again, Dai & bin!
Cheers!

Re: W-LAN not connecting on Dell E4300

Fist you should create a new topic for your problem, when you do please remember to give as much information as you can, things like "it doesn't work" are not very useful in tracking down your problem.
Useful Information could include :-

1. Make and model of machine
2. Version of Q4OS you are using
3. anything you have tried that didn't work
4. If you can get a network connection by cable you could install inxi and post the output of inxi -F
