For the last few weeks I have been unable to download video's using youtube-dl. Has Youtube made some change that hasn't came through the repositories yet or has FireFox messed things up more?

I think YouTube changes it's api quite often to make things more difficult for users that don't want to see all their adverts, I think the best way to use it is to follow their instructions for installation from the git-hub page which also covers updating when the inevitable failures happen.

Ok! Thanks Dia. That worked.
After doing a complete removal of youtube-dl via synaptic I found I had to go to /usr/local and recreate the bin directory before it would complete. But it is now working!

You're welcome Jim, a lot of users are having similar problems, partially caused by Debian's stable philosophy but I always recommend this route to anyone wanting to use YouTube-dl.
