Sadly the old Debian version of Digikam 5.9 and the current qt5.11 - even as just updated - still result in unusable software.
There is a long outstanding known issue with Digikam where you can open an image and edit it and everything is fine. However you cannot open any other image after that - all you get is a blank edit screen.
Other distros have all resolved this, but Debian are still sitting on it and presumably this is now going to be baked in to Buster - sad.
In the end it doesn't affect me much - I normally use Darktable anyway - but had hoped after all these years that it would be possible to use digikam
