Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

Hi All,

Yes, so for a minute there I couldn't backspace. I have now edited /etc/default/keyboard and that seems to be working.

Anyway, bought one of these [subject] device cheap offa ebay and have managed to get Q4OS installed. I had to use an older firmware for Android. I then cleared the eMMC and used the live installer from an external USB card reader / sd card.

All has gone pretty well apart from the following;

No sound sad
No wi-fi sad

I found this post http://www.linuxium.com.au/how-tos/mini … dioandwifi but am not sure how much of it is relevant in my case?

Could someone with more driver skills comment?

Tia!

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

If you have cable networking you could install inxi and post the output of inxi -F as the spec sheet doesn't show any specifics for wifi or sound chip.

Somewhat contradicted by this teardown...

guess I will follow the advice above...

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

Hmm, inxi doesn't detect either - still probably got enough to go off already...

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

Did an update / upgrade etc then following

https://github.com/hadess/rtl8723bs/wik … the-module

Make and install the module
Install build support packages, note that "4.1.0-0.bpo.2" below should be replaced by the result of running "uname -r"

# apt-get install unzip build-essential linux-headers-4.1.0-0.bpo.2-all-amd64

Download the module
# cd /usr/local/src

# wget https://github.com/hadess/rtl8723bs/archive/master.zip

Make the module
# unzip master

# cd rtl8723bs-xxx

# make

Install the module
# sudo make install

# sudo depmod -a

# sudo modprobe r8723bs

which all goes very well until the last command...

gbentley@minix:/usr/local/src/rtl8723bs-master$ sudo modprobe r8723bs
modprobe: FATAL: Module r8723bs not found in directory /lib/modules/4.9.0-8-amd6

so tried

# sudo modprobe rtl8723bs

with the same result. Looking in /lib/modules/4.9.0-8-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/realtek/rtlwifi/ there is no r8723bs folder?

And I can't find any corresponding .ko file using find?

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

The makefile states the following

install:
	@mkdir -p /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/
	@cp -n rtl8723bs_nic.bin /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723bs_nic.bin
	@cp -n rtl8723bs_wowlan.bin /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723bs_wowlan.bin

and those two files do exist in the specified directory!

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

I just tried installing this and got the same results as you did, that is the files mentioned in the Makefile are copied to the stated location but there are no source files! it looks like this simply copies the two files and nothing more???? maybe not the best driver to use?

According to this page the device should be available from kernel 4.12 onwards, so maybe the best bet would be to install the kernel from backorts and with a little luck it should just fire up. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. smile

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

@cpcnw
You could use the 'qinst-kernel-bpo' script to install kernel from backports, it will take care of the needed steps. Just run as a user:
$ qinst-kernel-bpo
You will need to edit the '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/30_debian_backports.list' file and enable backports repository first.

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

Following above this step succeeded # sudo modprobe rtl8723bs

However, whilst TDE Network Manager correctly identifies mine and my neighbours SSID's when I setup a connection with password it fails with 'unable to find SSID' or something similar sad

Edit: hang on, its working?! That was odd. When I put the Ethernet jack back in, then  edited the wireless connection to make sure I had everything right [I did] I got a tick against it. Then I pulled out the Ethernet and the Wi-Fi started working!?

Even odder - when I first set it up it said signal strength 92% (I'm right next to it!) but now I am actually connected its only 32%?

Anyway, it works! Would it be worth me posting the .ko anywhere?

Also, any tips on getting sound working?

Thanks!

smile

Re: Q4OS on Minix Neo Z64-W

Sorry, I understand now, I did have a similar issue with Qt screen sizing and noticed it first with VLC but it might also help with your situation, add

QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=0

to the file /etc/environment
