Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

I am trying to find the reason of my boot problem.

It started after I was "playing" with the partitions on GParted (deleted swap, moved some partitions, etc)

I spent several weeks using Q4OS even with the 90 second delay on each boot (the system was trying to find the swap but in the fstab file it did not have its entry).

A few weeks ago I fixed the fstab file, put the right swap UUID, and the 90 second delay was gone. But now the system shows a message saying it can not find the Swap partition and the UEFI, and goes straight into the emergency mode; just before the emergency mode message appears, the message appears saying that the system found the partitions correctly, so if I press Ctrl + D it continues the process normally.

Here is a part of $ sudo journalctl -b:

Then the message "You are in emergency mode" appears. So I press Ctrl+D or log into root and enter exit command, and then the boot continues.

I tried to comment the swap line in /etc/fstab, then I run update-initramfs -u and rebooted. But the error to find partitions appeared again, and then File check find swap and others partitions successfully even without swap line on /etc/fstab.

Also, in emergency mode, if I run free command, it shows swap is active.

I noticed that the first "not found partition" is sda3, my /home partition.

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

If you have changed the fstab file to correctly identify your swap partition then it should mount without the 90 second delay, although I'm sure you can simply remove the swap file mounting information from fstab and it should be automatically mounted regardless.

As for the remaining boot issues, I would recommend running

sudo update-grub

to make sure everything is correctly updated and if you still have issues could you post the output of

sudo blkid

and also the relevant parts of journalctl (like in the previous post)

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

I did sudo update-initramfs -u && sudo update-grub and then rebooted, but the issue persists.

blkid output is in the first post, here is my fstab content:

karina@q4os-desktop:~$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

karina@q4os-desktop:~$

And here is the last journalctl -b relevant output parts:

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

A couple of things I noticed that are different in your fstab to my UEFI laptop, mine is below: (and yes I usually remove all the superfluous text from that file smile )

proc						/proc			proc	defaults		0	0
UUID=DAAC-7F84					/boot/efi		vfat	defaults		0	0
UUID=27a5826d-62ac-43cd-936b-46e26fbece33	swap			swap	sw			0	0
UUID=b2463b0e-2fa0-48f3-9a91-b4ab424fc72e	/			ext4	rw,errors=remount-ro	0	1
UUID=756ab33a-969c-490c-b1f8-f0dd9b72e238	/media/dai/DATA		ext4	defaults		0	2

1. You have no proc mount
2 .Yours specifies umask=0077 for efi partition mine is set to defaults
3. You have different fsck instruction for efi partition, (yours 0 1, mine 0 0)

I also noticed your swap is commented but still mounted so that line could be safely removed if you prefer.

I am not sure if your /home partition is correctly defined as I do not use separate partitions for this (it looks ok for a normal mount though) but maybe somebody else who uses their system this way could confirm this for you.

If it were me I would try adjusting your fstab (points 1,2 and 3) to reflect the lines of mine to see if it will make a difference.

One other thing I might do if these do not work would be to change the fstab line for your /home to be the same as your root to make it like this:-

UUID=3cde98bd-1af5-4414-bca1-8eb36b7d44ae   /home    ext4          rw,errors=remount-ro       0       1

The only other thing I would research would be LVM as I can see it is being loaded in your journalctl output, I do not use this so again it would be something that might need clarification form another user...

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

I don't care what is /proc mount, but I will add it anyway.

I also don't care what LVM2 package does, so I removed it.

Now my fstab is:

karina@q4os-desktop:~$ cat /etc/fstab
# proc mount
proc						/proc			proc	defaults		0	0

# efi mount
UUID=54CE-DB5F  /boot/efi       vfat    defaults      0       0

# root mount
UUID=4371f46f-74e7-4053-b073-8f0c1c755790 /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1

# 300gb partition home data
UUID=3cde98bd-1af5-4414-bca1-8eb36b7d44ae   /home               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
karina@q4os-desktop:~$

I will do $ sudo update-initramfs -u && sudo update-grub and then reboot.

♪ Nothing has changed... hmm

Here is journalctl -b output:

------------------------

Before doing this, I created a new /swap partition, 'cause I read here https://askubuntu.com/questions/956042/ … -device-7s that 2 OS installed using same swap may cause issues... so as I have Ubuntu in dual-boot here, I created a new swap (now /dev/sda4) and added it to fstab (before I did the changes you suggested). Not worked, but now I have 8Gb of swap memory, the two partitions are now mounted even without being inserted on /etc/fstab.

A few months ago, when I changed partitions, deleted old swap partition, and the 90 seconds delay started, the new swap partition was not being used. I remember that sometimes the system used to hang or to be slow, especially when I was using KDE Plasma alongside Trinity (That was the reason for I install Ubuntu and "abandon" Q4OS for a while).

So, why in that time the new swap partition was being not used, but here the two swap partitions, including the newly created, is being used without any changes?

Here, the first "partition error" is /dev/sda3, where is actually the Ubuntu partition.
I don't remember where the 'ancient original swap' partition of Q4OS was.

May Q4OS be searching for the old swap, then giving the errors, and then the kernel finds the correct swap partition and 'fix' the boot process?

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

LVM should have been left installed until you found if you were in fact using it or not... re-installing it would be advised.  (maybe moot if you go with my final recommendation at the end of the post)

Issues with swap partition were caused by having it defined wrong in your fstab file which is what directly caused your 90 second delay, if you simply remove the "bad" entry in fstab the swap partition will be automagically mounted and used. This is a common problem especially when multi-booting (each OS wants to format swap during installation) and is likely a big consideration for putting measures in place to auto mount swap without fstab being required.

This is puzzling, and might hold a clue to the original problem maybe???

Which one is right?

I do think at this stage it would be a lot easier to perform a fresh install rather than trying to recover this one, but that's just what I would do (installation +/- 30 mins Vs troubleshoot and repair possibly days???). As this system is being multi-booted you should have access the partitions from your Ubuntu installation to recover any data that you require and then re-installation of Q4OS would be quite painless (choosing the same partitions that you are currently using if they are correct!) and as the home partition would be set-up during the install you would be able to see afterwards what the correct fstab entries should be (more for future reference and maybe post it here for any other readers with similar isuses)

According to this:
sda1 is UEFI
sda2 is Q4OS partition
sda3 is home partition
sda4 is the "second" swap partition, that I created yesterday
sda5 is the swap partition that I was using
sda7 is Ubuntu partition

Sorry, I was sleepy and I ended up confusing things... :v
The Ubuntu partition has nothing to do with the problem, I think

-----------------------------

About reinstall Q4OS, I don't want to consider it for now.

I have a physical problem on my laptop USB ports (there has no relation with boot issue).
So I am unable to use USB to perform a clean install of Q4OS.

When this problem occurred, just Q4OS was installed here on my machine. After the problem started, I installed Ubuntu from hard disk (created a partition, extracted ISO to that partition and then booted via GRUB smile Ubuntu is working fine ).

When the 90s delay started on Q4OS, I was so lazy and tried to perform a clean Q4OSinstall in the same way (extracting ISO to a partition and booting with GRUB) instead of fix the problem. The live ISO booted successfully but the installer could not install Q4OS.

I think the only way that I can perform now a clean install of Q4OS or any distro is using this way (or booting my HD on another machine, but I can't do this for now).

I really want to recover this system. I love Q4OS and don't wanna give up sad

-----------------------------

Anyway, I am downloading now Q4OS Plasma ISO, and will try to perform a clean install via Hard disk.
If it installs successfully (like Ubuntu), then I give up trying to fix the problem here and I'll be using the new Q4OS installation. But I really want to try to fix this problem.

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

Ok, I'm just installing into a VM with separate home partition to see how it mounts and I will use LVM and then see what settings are used by the installer. I will post back when it is done. smile

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

Ok, here is the fstab contents for a fresh UEFI installation

proc						/proc		proc	defaults		0	0
UUID=99DB-F0D5					/boot/efi	vfat	defaults		0	0
UUID=90d88daf-89b2-4abf-b460-7e404f8d82a9	swap		swap	sw			0	0
UUID=c3de238c-eb30-481c-8105-123370083247	/		ext4	rw,errors=remount-ro	0	1
UUID=d403b6bd-e852-4790-ab2b-02702523c1e0	/home		ext4	rw,errors=remount-ro	0	0

You could copy this (replacing UUID's) to your machine and see if that gets us any closer, obviously you can ignore (remove) the swap partition as both of yours will be mounted automatically.

One thing to note would be that I did not use LVM (I forgot to specify it when installing) but if that is the only problem then you should be able to install using a chroot environment. Let me know how you get on with this first. smile

Re: Could you help to find the reason of my boot issue?

I could not install Q4OS Plasma, after setting the user settings, the timezone, and select partitions and mount points, the installer says that I need to burn my ISO using another program, because the one that I used is not compatible with Q4OS.

-------------

I edited my /etc/fstab to look like yours.

karina@q4os-desktop:~$ cat /etc/fstab
proc						/proc		proc	defaults0	0
UUID=54CE-DB5F					/boot/efi	vfat	defaults0	0
UUID=4371f46f-74e7-4053-b073-8f0c1c755790	/		ext4	rw,errors=remount-ro	0	1
UUID=3cde98bd-1af5-4414-bca1-8eb36b7d44ae	/home		ext4	rw,errors=remount-ro	0	0
karina@q4os-desktop:~$

Now I will reboot and see if changed anything.

- Nothing has changed. I decided to delete the swap, and rebooted without any swap partition to see if it was the swap that was giving trouble. I found out it was not.

The error occurs with and/or without them.

I think that my problem have no solution. :'(

You could be right, I think the problem stems from the fact that you used LVM when installing and then changed/moved partitions and from what little I know of LVM it doesn't seem to like (allow) that. If you could manage to re-install the same way you managed before then I would recommend not to use LVM unless you really need to, I personally don't use it as I am constantly installing/re-installing/changing Os's on my systems as I try different features and options. I always keep one partition as my "main Os" which doesn't get too much installed (only what I deem essential for my needs) and then install other partitions for testing/playing/breaking.
