i salvaged my xp withQ4OS last fall. now it moves slow as a turtle. I want to see if it needs a program like CC Ceaner to clean it up and maybe bring back the speed it once had. Yet when I try to load it I cant download it. Also how do I update Chrome? I am not Linux literate. Thanks.

So called cleaning programs have limited value and can kill any type of operating system if used incorrectly. 99% of "speed up your PC" programs (mostly registry cleaners) for Windows are a scam. Speed improvements if any at all need specialist equipment to measure. See here for an unbiased review.

If your Q4OS is as slow as you suggest there must be something fundamentally wrong which could be system or hardware related. First step is to use your KSysGuard monitor to see if any one process is using abnormally high resources. Certainly a Linux cleaning program is unlikely to solve such an issue and could even make it worse but if you insist on using one there is a selection here.

When you install Google Chrome it adds an entry to your repository index and will thereafter update with your system automatically.

From the (classic) main menu Programs -> Accessories -> System -> KSysGuard

Or open a terminal and type ksysguard

crossworx, it sounds like your computer has some age to it. Last summer my old XP box, a Dell Dimension 3000 started moving "slow as a turtle". I opened it up to see that a capacitor which had been bulging a year or two earlier was now leaking, a process that I think had been accelerated by the heatwave we were in, though leakage would have happened sooner or later anyway.

I was lucky, there was only one bad capacitor on the board and that bad capacitor was the only one of it's type. It is often the case when one capacitor fails the others on the board of the same type are bulging to various degrees as well.

I had a junked board I picked up somewhere which had some of the same capacitors as the bad one in the Dell. I desoldered one of the good capacitors from the junked board and replaced the leaking one in the Dell. Reassembled the computer and all was well again. Now I am curious to see how long the replacement capacitor will last lol.

It's probably worth your while to open up the case and inspect the motherboard for swollen or leaking capacitors and then make a decision about your next step. And you will be doing yourself a favor if you clean out the dust that has accumulated in the blades of your fans and CPU cooler, especially the CPU cooler.

You could install GTKOrphan and remove 'orphan libs and unneeded packages' that are installed on your machine.

$ sudo apt install gtkorphan

Also, you may have a problem with swap partition, wrong boot command on GRUB, etc.

Did your system shows any problem at boot?
