Is there a recommended virus/malware protection program for Q4OS? Is it needed?
Offline
I've never used malware/anti-virus software on any of my Linux systems in the last 16 years that I've us Linux (never needed it), but I've heard that ClamAV is a favourite in the Linux community.
Current setup: Acer Aspire One D257 / Q4OS Centaurus / TDE / SeaMonkey 2.53.8.1

ClamAV is bad antivirus. I have tested it with my collection of viruses, trojans etc. and a lot of them have not been detected. Also I had problems with updates. Community likes it because it is free and open-source. But the detection quality is bad.
Currently I use Dr.Web Anti-virus for Linux, because it is cheapest, full featured and well supported. Eset AntiVirus is expensive, eScan contains only scanner, Comodo is not so good.
But for general usage you don`t need Antivirus for Linux at all. Only if you are working with sensitive data, such as trade secret data, online banking... or if you frequently send data to WinOS users, and don`t want their PC`s to be infected.
For general usage it is enough to download Dr.Web LiveDisk (for free), boot from it once a week and perform full system scan. For best protection I recommend to make full system backup using Systemback or Clonezilla. Just check the system using Dr.Web LiveDisk before making backup.
Also keep in mind, that AntiVirus will slow down your system, when residential protection is active.

Before asking for help please read this topic: https://www.q4os.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3502 If you have problems with WiFi network, try to install the Network Manager using Q4OS Software Centre.

I have used ClamAv to clean friends machines when they get infected, and I guess I've been lucky that it has found the problems although it has also given some false positives. If you do a google of antivirus comparisons you will see it is not the best as Rademes pointed out, but (IMO) I don't think it is bad.
So far we do not need antivirus solutions for linux, and I hope it remains that way

ClamAV Antivirus is not designed to protect workstations, its main purpose - work on mail gateways. Because of it, the developers try to make scanning speed as fast as possible. Unfortunately, such optimization negatively impacts malware detection abilities. Also, ClamAV shows a lot of false positives and desktop version does not have real-time protection.

Yes I can see you are probably more aware of the short-comings of ClamAv, I was just saying that I have used it with success in some situations. And as regards real-time protection, that is something that is currently more a Microsoft problem at the moment, unless you know of some Linux viruses that are currently deployed?
I am not an expert (nor very experienced) with viruses apart from helping some Ms users to clean their systems after infection, so I cannot speak with a large degree of education.

I was hoping I could get some direction. I downloaded the Dr. Web Antivirus for Linux. However I cannot figure out how to run it. The file is on my desktop and it opens with something called Kate. From there I can't figure out what to do. Help!

If the file opens in kate does it contain any instructions? What is the name of the file (including extension)?
EDIT:
Just checked out the website, did you check the documentation HERE?

If you can tell me exactly what it is that I'm looking for then I'll post it here..

No I didn't check the documentation. Sorry! I'm new to this and am not very good at making things work if it doesn't easily open or automatically install. However I am really good at making things worse!.

I know that feeling
Ok I will assume (correct me if I'm wrong) you have downloaded the 64 bit free trial version.
First off make yourself root with
sudo su
You will need to enter your password here.
Now you will need to add 32-bit architecture with
dpkg --add-architecture i386
Next you need to update apt with
apt-get update
Next you will need to install libc6:i386 with
apt-get install libc6:i386
Now you can run the installer with
bash drweb-11.0.2-av-linux-amd64.run
Although if you are using Q4OS 32 bit the instructions may vary, I have just tested this in virtualbox and everything installed correctly.

We have compiled new 'Dr. Web' installer for Q4OS, you can download here https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f … erimental/
Just download and doubleclick installer from filemanager. Keep in mind, all installers from this section are testing so far.

I think the Q4OS installer would be the easiest way to do this, Thanks guys.

I purchased it for $27.00 bucks. I have 64 bit version. I will check this all out when I have access to the laptop again. Thanks for responding and helping me out. I appreciate it. Are the instructions different if purchased?

TBH I wouldn't know, if you have a file with a similar name to the installer I had for the free trial (name ends with ".run") then I guess it should be the same. Although you may have just been sent the licence code, if that is the case simply download the installer and follow my guide (I would think you could use Q4OS installer too). Once installed you can enter the code for registration.

I used the Q4OS Sourceforge Installer. It worked perfectly! After it was done installing it asked for the serial number from when I purchased it. I entered the serial number and it's all set for a year. I did a scan and everything seems to be okay. Thank you all for the help!

Does this installer works well on Q4OS 2.5? And does it download and install the latest version of DrWeb antivirus?

Yes, the installer should work well with Scorpion, but keep in mind it's experimental one.
